My leanings are to allow/encourage it, though to exercise some discretion to try to make sure whoever does carry is well-trained, and to institute the best practices policies that are being developed for schools and the like. Thoughts appreciated.
IMO, if armed adults carry concealed on their persons with holsters appropriate to their sidearms, chances of an accident are near zero.

Don't get too carried away with the "well-trained" concept. You don't need folks to be Delta Force/SEAL TM6 Ninjas to qualify. Successful police/military service that involved operating handguns should work. Better yet, enroll your guardians in an NRA firearms safety course.
+1. Making it clear to your synagogue that only fully trained and vetted people are allowed to carry is an excellent route.

Yep, proper gear is key. Use holsters made for the model, no ill-fitting generics. The holster should cover the trigger, and retain the gun even if upside down. No off-body carry in unlocked containers like purses or briefcases. Basically, if a gun is carried so so you never need to fiddle with it and no one else can touch it, it's pretty darn safe to tote around.

One solution is to allow concealed carry in the synagogue. Ohio law gives places of worship the power to decide whether allow, and my guess is that most members and visitors would respect either decision. Obviously, though, a policy against concealed carry means nothing to someone who comes to harm other than to give him more comfort that he's unlikely to run into someone carrying.

My synagogue has a number of ex-military and others who have permits, including a military wife who comes to a lot of the kids programs. Does it make sense to allow or encourage concealed carry in the synagogue? That requires putting a lot of trust in the people who carry. Is the risk too high with lots of kids running around that an accident could happen?

HH,

Get the people with permits together, invite the local PD, and discuss and build an active shooter plan. Then run a drill. Fix your errors and do it again. Long story shrunk for context. Did this in a large building i was in charge of with lots of pros. Knew the timeline, date, concept of ops, planned response. Just not time of day. SWAT pro playing shooter walked in and started firing blanks. In other end of building we didn't hear it. Some people in other side of building froze and got morted, some egressed as planned, some hunkered down correctly. Security arrived in under 5 mins but didn't enter building immediately due to Murphy's law, and when they did SWAT shooter got a few of them. Lessons learned: 1. Have a plan to GTFO quickly. 2. Have a secure space to hunker down. 3. Be able to shoot back. 4. Things will go badly unless you plan ahead and then they still will. 5. You won't be sorry you did it.

out.
