Robin Williams & the Waldo Tunnel...

So I guess there's some movement afoot to rename the Waldo Tunnel in 'Frisco after Robin Williams. I was channel surfing talk radio in the car and stopped to listen to Michael Savage's show since that station was the only one not on commercial. He called bullshit on the renaming basically saying why should we glorify someone that committed suicide? If you want to rename it, name if after a serviceman/woman that lost their life. I don't know what to think about Michael Savage, in fact I've asked before what the general IGx opinion was of him...he seems a little bit too animated but I'm kinda with him on this but then I'm not from 'Frisco.

He thinks it is a bad idea to name it for someone that hung himself while his wife was sleeping in the next room. Some people, Savage being among them, think a suicide like
Robin's is an aggressive act against their spouses or others close to them.

William Waldo (1812–1881) was a candidate for Governor of California in 1853. He was born in Virginia, but spent most of his life in Missouri, where he was a merchant and steamboat captain. In 1849 he joined the gold rush to California at the head of a wagon train. In California the next year, reports arrived of impending starvation among numerous immigrants on the Nevada side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Waldo put great effort into recruiting and delivering supplies for them, and became well known for his relief attempts. In 1853 the Whig party nominated Waldo as their candidate for Governor, but he narrowly lost to the incumbent John Bigler. Following his defeat, he returned east, first to Minnesota and then back to Missouri where his wife and children had remained. In his later years he moved to Texas, where he died.

Isn't Waldo Tunnel on the way to the Golden Gate Bridge? If it is, why anyone would want to remind people of suicide on the way to such a prominent suicide destination is beyond me.

Personally (getting to your other point), I can't stand Savage. A&G via podcast is a far superior Bay Area alternative, and is at the top of 'how do I make this commute tolerable' listening choices. Far less sanctimonious, more informative, and infinitely more entertaining.
