it's the source that provides the capability to kill easily and man, so it's worth addressing.TerryB wrote:neither does the right to bear armsdead man walking wrote:as a rule, speech doesn't kill.

C'mon, the whole 'this doesn't happen in other countries' we know is political horseshit. So it's not a 'fundamental fact' given those other countries have tighter gun laws.dead man walking wrote:it's the source that provides the capability to kill easily and man, so it's worth addressing.TerryB wrote:neither does the right to bear armsdead man walking wrote:as a rule, speech doesn't kill.

you make my point: other countries don't have this problem because they have tighter--i.e. effectiv--gun laws. that means they limit the right to bear arms, which right enables the violence.
if a cop gets killed by a bullet that penetrates his or her protective vest, i don't believe that is ok. it seems that most of you here accept that as a cost of liberty.

Armor piercing bullets have been banned for civilians for years, maybe 2 decades. If you are referring to rifle rounds, it's because the standard cop vest is not intended to stop rifle rounds. There are vests that will, they don't wear them because crime committed with rifles is rare compared to every other kind of weapon.dead man walking wrote:

Let me state up front. I don't trust the anti-gun lobby and politicians at all. They lie continually, and they are never satisfied. No matter what they get, it's just a "good first step" and then they push for the next step. Just days ago, Sen. Boxer said on camera that California's tight gun laws were responsible for a 50% drop in violence in that state since the 90's, and that the rest of the country shoud emulate them. Well, the rest of the country had the exact same drop, even states that loosened their gun laws. Britain's murder rate was always less than ours, even when the laws were similar. It's societal and not tool related. Our murders aren't fueled by the average person, 70-80%;are gang or drug related.

I don't know much about bullets but I've been thinking about the cost of various liberties. So many lives could be saved via a few laws regarding junk food, booze, guns, speed limits, etc. Thoughtful people will compromise but that requires a nonexistent trust.dead man walking wrote:i don't know what you mean by political horseshit.

So, decisions must be made and sides chosen in our culture wars. I've chosen dangerous Liberty as a first principal. I suspect that I'm on the losing side.

the donkey is correct regarding junk food, speed limits, smoking. in most of those cases, people are killing themselves. the weakness of that argument is that the relentless marketing by the agents of death--coke, marlboro, porsche--shape people's attitudes. hence former mayor bloomberg wanted to limit the size of your soda pop.
no, we can't make the world perfectly safe, no matter how much the federal agency of playpen safety would like us to believe otherwise. i think we can make our country safety with some reasonable choices about guns.
stay safe.

Mass shootings do indeed happen in other first world nations with tougher gun laws. Don't you read your Gray Lady?

https://theweek.com/articles/592603/wha ... y-surpriseContradictions abound in the available data about America's gun violence epidemic. The numbers do not point to one clear trend. They do not really tell us whether we are managing risk any better. They are confusing. They often contradict the confident assertions made by partisans. There is plenty of fruit to cherry pick.
So what do we actually know?
We know that cities with high homicide rates juke their stats.

In 1975 approx. 20,000 murders (assume 70% w/guns). Last year there were approximately 14,000 even though there are almost 100,000,000 more people and many millions more guns. From a gun perspective, Amurikkka is far safer than the good old days. Also note that the murder rate per 100,000 people is half of what it was.Yes I Have Balls wrote:Interesting statistic about the immense amount of guns that have been sold in the US since Obama was voted in. Regarding the negro, there is plenty of unspoken racism in the liberal desire to disarm America. Regarding, THE 1/2 negro in the White House, he is a statist so free Americans taking responsibility for their own self defense are anathema to him.
