We're trying to figure out if there's anything we can do for them, I don't know what besides the usual offer of some food, which feels pretty inadequate.

Be present, go to the services, bring some food, and be there for them when the hoopla of death is over and they're still grieving but 99% of everybody else has moved on - especially when they want to talk. I never thought that stuff mattered but have seen over the years that it does and tiny acts of kindness might be remembered for years.

That is actually great advice. I echo this and feel for any parents losing a child. It made me appreciate the birth of my healthy grandson yesterday even more when I read this. I'm sorry for their loss and yours.

I hit black ice at 70 MPH last night.
Wound up fish tailing, driving with it, nearly getting it straightened out, sliding off the road at about 25 mph, then hitting the embankment & stopping all at once.
Had my wife, my 12 yo, 9 yo, & 4 month baby with me.
Everyone was fine, but Christ on a cracker, I got reminded how precious life is.

so important to be there when the funeral passes and folks go home and they are left with breath stealing emptiness. Ok to just sit with them and listen or be there in the quiet. And it might take more than a year.
