So, what's on the Thanksgiving menu?

So, what's on the Thanksgiving menu?
I keep it simple and traditional: Turkey, gravy, dressing, salad, string beans, mashed potatoes, pies and ice cream. Beer, wine, bourbon.
It's enough just shopping and cleaning for company, I ain't got time to get creative. But it's not too late, if'n any of you have any great ideas?...

Brie
pumpkin curry soup
Arugula salad w/ walnuts, dried cranberries, stilton
Turkey, dry brined per LA Times with rosemary and lemon zest
stuffing w/ sweet sausage (in bird)
Roasted brussels sprouts with bacon
mashed
roasted acorn squash
roasted carrots
canned cranberry sauce
Apple pie
banana cream pie
maybe one more dessert
I generally hate eating out of cans but I love the Ocean Spray canned cranberry sauce, it's like somewhere b/w jelly and jell-o consistency.

We were on our own for Christmas last year, had an awesome meal in Chinatown. It was nice, but different. Kind of odd opening gifts with two people.DPR wrote:We are staying at home and keeping it non-traditional and easy. Baked ziti with a salad and garlic bread for dinner. Cheesecake for dessert. Not going anywhere and family is not visiting. I wish my Christmas could be like this, too.

Driving down to Philly early, taking my GF to meet my family. First stop, St Dot's for the Turkey Bowl. My 14 yr old nephew is the starting QB.
Off to Moms for cheese and crackers, followed by the traditional Turkey dinner.
The GF made pie crusts last night, and will be baking a pumpkin pie and two apple pies tonight.
Hoping for green bean casserole, and of course canned cranberry sauce along with the stuffing, mashed potatoes, creamed onions, and turnips.
And turkey sandwiches before bed.

1 cup chopped onion
clove garlic
1 tsp. curry powder
1/2 tsp kosher
1/8 tsp coriander
1/2 tsp curshed red
3 cups chicken broth
16 oz can pumpkin (not pie mix)
1 cup half and half
sour cream and chives (optional)
saucepan, melt butter, saute onion and garlic until soft
add curry poweer, salt, coriander, red pepper, cook 1 minute
add broth, boil gently uncovered, 15-20 mins, stir
add pumpkin, half and half, cook 5 mins
pour into blender, blend until creamy, serve warm (can be reheated)
garnish w/ sour cream and chives if desired
makes 6 cups.
FUCK. glad I'm not the one tasked w/ making this stuff. I'd probably just toss all that shit in the blender, liquify and warm it up in a saucepan.

Our humble contribution will be a roasted tomato soup.

broccoli salad
broccoli florets
red grapes (sliced in half the long way)
chopped Bacon (because bacon)
Green onions
Sliced almonds or walnuts
Dressing-- miracle whip and vinegar mixed to taste
Mix together and serve cold.
Cheesy potatoes
3 lbs boiled, peeled, and mashed potatoes
16 oz container of sour cream or IMO
16 oz yellow cheese
Mix well in a large bowl, and microwave until the cheese melts. If you want, transfer to a large, reasonably shallow, oven safe ceramic dish and put in the oven under the broiler so you get bit of crust on top.
Both can be made the night before, and are approved by picky kids and adults.

bag of favorite greens (I prefer spinach or spring mix)
chopped bacon
Chopped apples (preferably something relatively crisp)
crumbled goat cheese
chopped italian parsley
chopped cilantro (optional-- not everybody likes it)
a bit of heated bacon grease works as a decent dressing, but use it sparingly.

Re: So, what's on the Thanksgiving menu?
I gotta say, there's a pretty good product at Costco: "sweet Kale salad". It's a mix of Kale, brussels sprouts, cabbage, chickory. all washed and diced. Also includes cranberries and pumpkin seeds. Also a poppy seed dressing, but I make my own garlicky, dijon vinagrette. but you can just throw the contents of this thing in a bowl and you've got a pretty snappy little salad. which, i'll probably have to finish myself...

Leaving room for the following:
A large slice of Rhubarb/Apple Pie
A large slice of Mince Meat Pie
A bottle of Salavator Double Bock
Then a late afternoon/early evening nap.
I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

It/they was/were a big hit.
It's our turn again this year, so we are going to do it again. My wife is making pumpkin bars with Praline topping and little "hand pies" with raspberry jam.
We will also cook some Brussels sprouts in a skillet in bacon grease with mustard and dried cranberries.
Normally I can appreciate a good green salad, but for Thanksgiving? Fuck that.
