Why are some states more peaceful than others?

Post by DrDonkeyLove »

America's Most / Least Peaceful States

Most Peaceful States...............Least Peaceful States
10) Iowa.................................10) Mississippi
9) Rhode Island......................9) South Carolina
8) Hawaii................................8) Arkansas
7) Washington........................7) Texas
6) North Dakota.....................6) Missouri
5) Utah...................................5) Arizona
4) Minnesota..........................4) Florida
3) New Hampshire..................3) Nevada
2) Vermont.............................2) Tennessee
1) Maine.................................1) Louisiana

Many demographicals listed for why some are more peaceful than others. What commonalities/differences does the IGx brain trust see that the article misses (or doesn't dare state)?

Poverty is the key to most of the other issues - ie "A number of education-related metrics correlate strongly with how peaceful the states are."

With the exception of Missouri the most dangerous states are all right to work states.
I see Iowa, north dakota, and Utah falling by the wayside soon enough.

The key here might be the number of a particular racial demographic in the states with the most violence.
Arms are the only true badge of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of the free man from the slave.

I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

The report considers five categories — separated into three groups — to calculate the United States Peace Index for 2011. The first group includes rates of violent crimes such as robbery and aggravated assault, as well as the rates of homicide in each state. The second group relates to the institutions used to prevent violence and is measured by the number of police per capita and the number of incarcerated residents per capita. The third includes the availability of small arms.

What is a "small arm" and what does "availability" have to do with "peacefulness"? .

How does "availability of small arms" factor into this organization's mission of "violence reduction"?

http://economicsandpeace.org/about-us/mission

After 1945 nuclear arms were never again officially used. They kept the peace in Europe for how many decades? Why are weapons ALWAYS associated with "violence" especially if they deter violence? On a smaller scale guns can deter violent crime.

And don't share an unsecured border with Mexico. An unreported fact is the CA border was secured over decade ago with a border fence that predates the one the Feds fought tooth and nail, not to build along the AZ, NM, and Texas border.

Agreed. I lived in Yuma, AZ for 2.5 years and just north of Austin, TX for 3 years. Overall, both were very nice places to live in the late 20th Century....I'm sure the Mexican drug cartels have spiked the crime stats in those states.

Run a regression analysis comparing crime rates and the percent of niggers in the populace.

Let me know what startling conclusion you come to.

Southerners have too many guns and they're mostly retarded on top of it?

No, no, no. If a population is densely armed it becomes peaceful since weapons are a deterrent to violence.

So if people have a lot of guns there isn't a lot of gun violence, just like in America.

Amazingly enough, it's never the redneck good old boy with his hunting rifle who makes the local news for aggravated assault or homicide...it's the schwoogies with the gold teefesus and 9MM.

The south DOES have a serious problem...too many deadbeat, welfare cheating, breeding like roaches, malt liquor drinking niggers.

Nuff said.

Culture Is Essential
by Peter J. Richerson and Robert Boyd
An excerpt from Not By Genes Alone: How Culture Transformed Human Evolution

The American South has long been more violent than the North. Colorful descriptions of duels, feuds, bushwhackings, and lynchings feature prominently in visitors’ accounts, newspaper articles, and autobiographies from the eighteenth century onward. Statistics bear out these impressions. For example, over the period 1865–1915, the homicide rate in the South was ten times the current rate for the whole United States, and twice the rate in our most violent cities. Modern homicide statistics tell the same story.

In their book, Culture of Honor, psychologists Richard Nisbett and Dov Cohen argue that the South is more violent than the North because southern people have culturally acquired beliefs about personal honor that are different from their northern counterparts. Southerners, they argue, believe more strongly than Northerners that a person’s reputation is important and worth defending even at great cost. As a consequence, arguments and confrontations that lead to harsh words or minor scuffles in Amherst or Ann Arbor often escalate to lethal violence in Asheville or Austin.

...
Nisbett and Cohen support their hypothesis with an impressive range of evidence. Let’s start with statistical patterns of violence. In the rural and small-town South, murder rates are elevated for arguments among friends and acquaintances, but not for killings committed in the course of other felonies. In other words, in the South men are more likely than Northerners to kill an acquaintance when an argument breaks out in a bar, but they are no more likely to kill the guy behind the counter when they knock off a liquor store. Thus, Southerners seem to be more violent than other Americans only in situations that involve personal honor. Competing hypotheses don’t do so well: neither white per-capita income nor hot climate nor history of slavery explain this variation in homicide.

"Honor culture" also explains the disproportionate military contributions by the South.

Only because they don't live on top of 50 other redneck families.

I think that would explain a lot if Southern murders were carried out en masse by pissed off rednecks, or disgruntled Southern dandies. As it were, most of the rapes and murders that take place in and around Memphis, Jackson, Little Rock, Birmingham, and Atlanta are the drug and stupidity fueled escapades of everyone's favorite group of knuckle dragging, sub-human retards...namely, niggers. When they aren't busy increasing the already horrific nigger population density of the metro areas, using HUD money to move their Crowne Victoria driving asses out to where decent white folks long ago fled, or beating a path to the local welfare office where they are gifted with their portion of the weekly "nigger feed" that is witheld from my paychecks, they are merrily contributing to the FBI crime database that would statistically prove what honest white folks have anecdotally concluded long ago...you don't want fucking niggers living anywhere near you, and this country is doomed unless we round their saucer lipped asses up and shipped them back to the third world shit pits that they clambered out of.

There are states listed among the most peaceful that have liberal gun laws so that can't be the answer. Thanks for trying though.
