FlowMotion DVD

Post by bill fox »

I was sent pre- production copy of a DVD called "FlowMotion" by Joe Wilson Ph.d, who owns Memphis Martial Arts ( http://www.memphismartialarts.com ), and is Sonnon's #1 guy.

Production value is basic, him in his dojo, but totally clear in both camera work and audio. Joe has a very calm way about him and is a thoughtful instructor.

If you have been really diligent in keeping up with everything happening in the joint molbility/flexibility field most of this will be pretty familiar to you. There are elements of Body Flow, Warrior Wellness, Z Health, Maxwell's stuff, even some static stuff like Relax into Stretch. There are even some fast arm things I only remember from Rickson's Choke.

This is in no way a criticism.

The think the thing people will like about this is that it can be used as a follow along. The DVD starts with Wilson going through a full routine in about 15m. Then there's about an hour of him breaking down each movement, then a full speed demo at the end. There's no doubt his mobilty is excellent. If you check out his resume on his site he's the real deal, as is also readily appearant on Sonnon's Hardwork DVD. He's shown doing some double 45lb CB stuff in the intro which is no joke. The routine is short enough that a dedicted MA person could actually do it everyday.

For someone just getting into all this stuff I can't imagine anything much better. If you've seen everything and are always trying to figure out how to combine all this stuff into something you'll actually do, or you haven't pulled the trigger on buying something in this area, I can't imagine you would ever need more then this as an adjunct to your MA training.

A really nice, usable summary of lot's of joint mobilbity and flexibilty info.

Bill - how does it compare to Steve Maxwell's joint mobility?
I'm upset I can't beat you to death with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

Thanks for the review, Bill.

I've got Wilson's "Rmax Powered Running", and can vouch for his calmness. He seems like an extremely centered (and likable) person.

It's pretty similar. It's another take on "daily practice" pretty much culled from the same sources. It's might be worth it if you think Maxwell's stuff helped you. You might pick up a couple things you like.

Update: I ordered it because I like Wilson's way of presenting things as a rule. It's pretty good - also has some of the basic material from other RMAX DVDs in terms of ground work, and some good static stretching advice. Even if you consider RMAX to be populated with tin-foil hat cult members, you might like FlowMotion, since Wilson leaves all that esoteric theory and terminology at the door and just does the demo.

If you only want to have and keep one JM and general warm up/health oriented DVD, this would be a good one.
