English Standard Version of the Holy Bible

Post by DBID »

This translation is regarded as the most accurate of all the "essentially literal" translations of the scriptures. If you would like to read God's Word with a high assurance that you are reading pretty much the original words, and you do not desire to learn Greek or Hebrew, this would be an excellent choice.

Highly recommended.

Sorry, Shaf. Given the range of items reviewed here, I didn't feel my review would be out of place.

Dave can delete it if it is improper.

We really need BZRKR back here to argue that the King James version is the only proper translation.

Oh, the humanity.

The KJV is a good translation, but it is old and in need of replacement.

The New King James Version is also very good. I consider it the second best translation of the scriptures after the ESV.

The New American Standard is also good, but it is so literal as to be somewhat unreadable - word order wise. The ESV is literal and accurate, but strives for readability as well.

Us rural folk would normally use the J.C Whitney catalog or other thing that came in the mail and was made of absorbent paper, since they are free of charge. But if you ever leave a hotel without swiping whichever bible they put in the nightstand, you deserve having to pay for Charmin. Nice thing about Marriott properties is that you can get a Book of Mormon to break up the outhouse monotony.

I find that King James' and his love for sucking dick really makes the KJV a wonderful tool for penecostals and old timey protestants.

That's harsh, man. Even pirates just settled for burying or burning it. Maybe cutting a Black Spot out of the cover. But I don't think even Teach ever wiped his ass with Holy Writ.

Feh. Get an interlinear, and decide for yourself.

Feh, have one. This translation is the bomb. As a matter of fact, there is a reverse interlinear NT of the ESV which has the word in ESV order, not Greek order.

Good point-- why would you want things in the original Greek order? #-o A good interlinear should have both.

Nothing wrong with the Greek order except for it's backwards to us most of the time.

I go with Alan Watts Jr. suggestion that all versions of the Bible be sealed away for 100 years or so. Sort of a chance to reset our cultural perspective on the title. Once we've given it a rest for a century or so, maybe we can actually READ it again - as opposed to the endlessly predigested reflexive arguments Western Civ has been having over it.

Hmmm. Better make it two centuries.
