Kitchen Confidential

Post by Sassenach »

After 10 plus years of restaurant work I had put off reading this book because I didn't want to rehash the coked up cooks, fucked up owners, sexual depravity, and sketchy food handling practices that I saw in my time.

This book rehashes all of that... but it's fucking funny. Bourdain's dislike of mainstream food tv stars (he refers to Emeril as an evil ewok) and easy way of dragging you down the rabbit hole makes this for a very enjoyable read.

Chef's are depraved creatures, it's a wonder we don't have any on IGX.

Cooking for a living is what convinced me to go back to school and finish my degree. That, combined with knowing exactly what I could expect if I advanced to a really good job (my dad was a classic European trained chef). It's a hard way to live. I know exactly why my dad chose it, but it just wasn't for me.
