Lion Stout

Post by beefheart »

A top-fermented, allegedly bottle-conditioned (no yeast and not very cloudy) 8.0% stout from the unhappy isle of Sri Lanka. The late Michael Jackson described it in his 2000 review: "Pruney, mocha aromas and flavors; tar-like oiliness of body; peppery, bitter-chocolate finish." He also questions what the brewery means by "bottle-conditioned" since it seems to be pasteurized. That doesn't prevent the US distributor from quoting him on the label or keeping the "bottle conditioned" description on the bottle.

I would respectfully disagree w/ Mr. Jackson's descritpion of bitter; Guiness Export, which I'm sure has shaped everybody's opinion of what a stout is, tastes much more bitter to me. It could simply be that the Beer Hunter has a more finely tuned palate and 'bitter-choclate' and 'hop-bitter' might be seperate entities that I am not able to differentiate. I actully though it had a sourness, like trappist ales, that I enjoyed.

The best thing about it: $3.50 for 625 ml (21 oz) at Jungle Jim's.

Local Oatmeal Stouts and Breakfast Stouts are slowly changing my mind about them. I don't usually prefer them.

I've had Lion Stout before, a while back...I can't recall it.

I had an Oyster Stout awhile back called "Biere d' Clam." It was outstanding.

Biere d' Clam is a great double entendre.
