Arms are the only true badge of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of the free man from the slave.

I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

It sounds like you might have to wait for the DVD to see the version that rocks.

a frisky cheerleader climbs onto a trampoline and begins stripping naked as she jumps up and down until she does a split and her skirt blows up without panties underneath. "You get the full 'Britney Spears-getting-out-of-the-limo view,' " our source says. Another jolting scene shows a grossly obese man chewing on a baby.

The first half ("Planet Terror") was a lot better than the 2nd half ("Death Proof"), but I'm pretty sure that this was on purpose - in a real drive in double feature, the 2nd feature is always cheaper looking and lamer than the first one. "Death Proof" was kind of a cheat, because it wasn't really a "grindhouse" film - it was more of a self aware tribute to them, with the characters all spending large amounts of time talking about how they loved movies like "Vanishing Point" and "Dirty Mary, Craxy Larry".. . And it seemed to combine "road chase films" with "Switchblade Sisters" and "Faster Pussycast! Kill! Kill!" while missing the whole revenge theme that movies like this are normally built around.

The movie I really want to see was in the opening "coming attractions": "Machete". "If you send him to kill the bad guy, make sure you're not the bad guy he's going to kill!" Danny Trejo jumping a motorcycle off a ramp while firing a handlebar-mounted minigun. That was two minutes of sheer awesomeness and hilarity, and it was worth the cost of admission all by itself.
"I also think training like a Navy S.E.A.L. is stupid for the average person. I would say PT like an infantry unit, run, body weight stuff, hump a little, a little weights and enjoy life if you are not training for specifics." -tough old man

I read somewhere that Rodriguez plans to make it. ROCK!

Dissenting opinion of Death Proof, which I just saw on DVD.

A great tribute to car chase films. I saw all the films they mention and are venerating. Especially loved Vanishing Point. The final car chase rivals Bullet. Yes, Tarantino starts off making it look a little like cheesy movies, then skips (for the most part) the bad editing and streaks on the film. Gets into the characters. They are fully developed, Kurt Russel is fucking great, and Zoe Bell, who is a stunt woman (she did the sword fighting for Uma Thurman in Kill Bill) is a star. Her first film, and she's a natural. Of course she does her own stunts. She's got muscle, still remains feminine, but somehow, really physically tough. She can come over to my house, kick my ass, then fuck me senseless any day.

I liked that movie too, mostly because of Zoe Bell, she's bad ass. She used to be the stunt double for Lucy Lawless in Xena too. She's also one of the primary subjects of a documentary about stunt women, the name of which I can't remember.

Zoe Bell, yes. Awesomely badass. Delivers the final, killing blow with an axe kick IIRC.

First half of "Death Proof:" tedious, pretentious, overlong. All that is bad about Tarantino, in other words. A less self-absorbed director would have done the set-up with the first pack of girls in 15 minutes and then gotten to the real story with Zoe and her crew, but T loves himself too much.

Ever since Grindhouse came out, T has been trying to distance himself from Rodriguez and "Planet Terror." He did it at some awards show, did it with the DVD release, etc. Sometimes it's like they were never in the same feature.

Even the local asshole critic Godfrey Cheshire (yes, that's his real name) went on about how "Planet Terror" was a "movie," while "Death Proof" was "cinema." Christ what a knob.

Agreed.

Let me try again: It's not that the characters aren't well realized, or that the action isn't good. I think my real point (which I wasn't very good at making) is that the characters in an "real" grindhouse film would no more be aware of "Vanishing Point" and "Bullitt" than fish would be aware of the water they swim in. Tarentino didn't make a grindhouse film...he made a movie version of a George Pelcanos novel, when he should have been making an adaptation of a Donald Goines novel (with white characters, if that's what he wanted). I love Pelecanos, I've bought every novel he's ever written, and I wish that someone would adapt "King Suckerman" to the big screen....but it ain't grindhouse if you spend half of screen play talking about old movies.

So my point (if you are inclined to be charitable and grant that I actually have one) is that Rodriguez actually made a good "grindhouse" movie and Tarentino didn't. He made a "post modern pulp tribute" movie. And the fact that the characters in the 2nd half of the movie had no relationship to the first set of characters (except for Russell, of course) really irritated me. I'm just saying.

Yes and yes. And folks acting like "Planet Terror" wasn't originally packaged with "Death Proof" irritates me further.

Fuck it, "Machete" is getting made and really, that's all that matters.
