Just saw it last night.
I'd say it was actually scarier and more effective in that way than "Cloverfield."

SPOILER SPACE

A few things: yes, the ending is majorly fucked up and all kinds of wrong. The novella's ending was actually more satisfying, even though it was totally open-ended.

I was surprised at how spare the production was. Almost no music at all for a really long time. It was a much more effective way of making it "real" than shaky-cam.

And I would have duct-taped that fucking woman's mouth shut 15 minutes into the crisis. "Shut it or I'll shut it for you. One chance." They accurately analyzed and predicted the fact that she was a serious danger, and then let her keep running her yawp. No fucking way.

Take-home lesson: where's there's life, there's hope. Go down swinging.

I thought it was ok but very predictable.

Martyring that harpy would be a bad idea. Lure her into the back when nobody is watching then say one of the monsters got her.

I did NOT see that ending coming at all. Fuck!

SPOILER

I knew what he was going to do when he promised that kid he wouldn't let the monsters eat him. When they ran out of gas I said "he'll do 'em all then the tanks will roll in." When he was screaming after doing the deed I said to Mrs. Moose, "here comes the tank". Bam! There it was.

Psychic muthafucka.

I was spoiled by having read it years ago. At the end of the novella he's in a hotel room, writing the story on hotel stationery. They've heard one brief garbled burst on the car radio, "Hartford." So that's where they're heading.

Saw it last night. Expected it to be the usual load of crap but it was great.

SPOILER PART

The way they ended it was very out of character for the protagonist I thought. The guy was a true battler and survivor, and then he does that. BTW, if American cars didn't guzzle so much gas there might have been a happy ending.
