Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace

Post by Hagbard »

As smart as Pynchon and as much fun to read as Neal Stephenson. The overall tone of the novel was very sad, however there were some extremely funny moments that made me laugh my ass off.

Warning: it's 1000 pages long and has over 300 end notes.

If you can read Pynchon, I think you are smarter than he is. Will check it out.

Your choice of sexual partners indicates otherwise.

No, it indicates a lack of standards as well as discretion since I got photographed in the act.

His ability to drill granite is to be admired.

I actually like Wallace's non-fiction stuff better. "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" was amazingly erudite and funny at the same time. The essay in his trip aboard a cruise liner was as good a look at the psychology and sociology of the cruise culture as I've ever seen. And I learned a bunch of stuff about tennis, state fairs, David Lynch and Illinois and enjoyed every page of it. Wallace (and Chuck Klosterman) get more out gazing at their navels and their movie and book collections than most people would get out of a year long trip around the world.
"I also think training like a Navy S.E.A.L. is stupid for the average person. I would say PT like an infantry unit, run, body weight stuff, hump a little, a little weights and enjoy life if you are not training for specifics." -tough old man

I'm looking forward to reading more of his work, ABW, IJ is my first by DFW. So far this year I've read Against The Day and Infinite Jest in addition to shit loads of lesser works and the usual reams of non-fiction. Right now it is Mason & Dixon; not sure what I'll hit next.
