Apocalypto

Post by johno »

Worth seeing, even if you like Jews & hate Mel.

Truly a great movie. The visual story-telling is so good, no voices or subtitles were really required. Beautiful cinematography. And violent.

If Mel hadn't screwed up w/ his DUI & anti-semitic ramblings, he would have gotten, and deserved, the Oscar for Apocalypto.

Mel knows how to tell a story.

The fact that he's in touch with his inner demons only adds to his ability as an actor and director.

Apocalypto was a good good movie, especially the scene were the good guys show up in the boat.

Arms are the only true badge of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of the free man from the slave.

I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

Yep. The world is a better place for the Aztecs' slaughter. It's astonishing how such a widespread civilization was so nasty at the core.

I thought Apocalypto was about the decline of the Mayans? I have not seen it.

But yeah, the Aztecs were seriously bloodthirsty assholes. Cortez & Co. got help from the surrounding areas, because they were pretty damn tired of being hunted and sacrificed all the time.

BTW, "The Broken Spears" is a good read; a contemporary account of the fall of the Aztecs, and told from the Aztec perspective.

What the fuck, who cares, they were all fucked up societies with some serious pathological behaviors socialized in.

And, they weren't cool like some of the Maori and other gonzo cannibal tribes, just a bunch of motherfuckers keepin' the little man down and slaughtering him for food and shit.

Although all the Mesoamerican groups practiced human sacrifice, the Aztec were the ones who went totally batshit with it. Even counting for exaggeration, they ritually slaughtered people on an ungodly scale. So to speak.
They also didn't have the math or science (or writing) on the Mayan level.

The Maya are still there, BTW. They never got crushed by the Spanish; the state-level society had already fallen over all by itself long before the Spanish ever got there.

Saw it last night on Encore. Missed the beginning, so the hero had already been caught and tied to the poles. The bad guy was a serious MoFo. I give it two thumbs up for sure. The chase through the jungle rocked.

I wonder if Mel used the blue face paint left over from Braveheart on this film.

That would have been Cortez. Or maybe some other conquistador. I've forgotten who got there first.

It would have been Columbus, however it was Cortez and some others that actually pacified the Yucatan.
