Gerber EAB knife

I carry a pen knife all the time, and probably use it 6 times a day on a slow day. Dull knives are a drag, and who really has time to sharpen them? I think Gerber has solved my problem: a small, attractive knife with a replaceable blade.
<$10, available at Walmart and other fine sporting goods retailers.

The Spyderco Sharpmaker (and probably similar gadgets) makes sharpening pretty easy.3fingers wrote:Dull knives are a drag, and who really has time to sharpen them?

Re: Gerber EAB knife
Folding utility knives that take those blades are all over the place now, but it looks like Gerber has stripped it down and made it less bulky. If it really goes for under $10 it's also no more expensive than the brands at Lowes or wherever.

Re: Gerber EAB knife
man , that thing will do whatever you would need to do in a given day ,I just like a nice knife.
Re: Gerber EAB knife
Less bulky and more of the blade is exposed and useable. Weight is about 2 oz....feels quite a bit lighter and about half the length of folding utility knife from Lowes.GoDogGo! wrote:Folding utility knives that take those blades are all over the place now, but it looks like Gerber has stripped it down and made it less bulky. Do you own one? Satisfied? Can they be found cheaper than the $48 on Ebay?Pinky wrote:The Spyderco Sharpmaker (and probably similar gadgets) makes sharpening pretty easy.

Re: Gerber EAB knife
Forgive me, but what makes this so special? I have Husky blades like this from Costco that ran 20 bucks for a three pack. They're great, but what makes the Gerber one worth paying Gerber geeters for?
*Edit* I missed its low cost due to high velocity speed reading.

I own one and like it a lot. I paid around $45-50 for mine, and I don't think it goes for much less.3fingers wrote:Do you own one? Satisfied? Can they be found cheaper than the $48 on Ebay?Pinky wrote:The Spyderco Sharpmaker (and probably similar gadgets) makes sharpening pretty easy.

Re: Gerber EAB knife
Why is anyone taking knife advice from someone called 3fingers?
Re: Gerber EAB knife
Trust me, amputation with a dull knife is no fun. Amputation with a roller chain and sprocket is even less fun.BucketHead wrote:Why is anyone taking knife advice from someone called 3fingers?

No, but I had a co-worker who is one of those dumbasses who resets breakers without checking to see if someone's re-assembling a chain.MarcoFP wrote:Are you one of those dumbasses who puts hands into moving objects?

So you're the dumbass who didn't lockout/tagout/isolate all potential energy?
Does everyone at the plant laugh at your face or behind your back?

You're thinking too big; no OSHA regulations on family-owned farms employing family members. We can cut off each others fingers without fear of lawsuits.

I can generate some sympathy for you on that then.
What a bad deal.

Pffft: not looking for sympathy, it's just a username that I can remember.

Lockout/tagout is still a good idea for retaining digits and limbs, even if lawsuits aren't a possibility.3fingers wrote:You're thinking too big; no OSHA regulations on family-owned farms employing family members. We can cut off each others fingers without fear of lawsuits.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Funny world.
My father just purchased one of those knives today.

Re: Gerber EAB knife
After carrying an EAB for a while, I am now less impressed. For some reason, the blade was often not razor-sharp when I pulled it out, even when it should have been (because it was a new blade.)
I finally realized that the proportions are slightly off. If the spine of the blade is not pushed up hard against the back of the slot when you tighten the screw, then the edge will touch the inside of the blade cover when you close it. This is a bad thing for the edge.
And even if it is tight to begin with, it's possible for it to move over time, and once again the edge is rubbing against the stainless steel surface and the edge gets murdered in short order.
So I like the tiny size and the minimalist construction, but there is definitely a problem. I'll write to Gerber and see what they say.
