Kalos Sthenos: From the Ground Up

Post by Abandoned by Wolves »

I know there was a generally negative discussion (maybe even a "furor") about this in the training forum a couple weeks back, but I managed to get my hands on a copy of the DVD set from a friend who's a big fan of Gray Cook, thought it was at least worth a look.

It's pretty good, for what it is. Yes, it is overpriced. Yes, they split the content into two DVDs when one would have held the (relatively short) program just fine. Yes, I can see how people might be irritated by trainers and PTs trying to overcomplicate every fucking thing and making it so people are afraid to tie their own shoes without an instructional DVD and a certification.

But someone interested in learning the TGU as a daily "recharge" style training exercise will probably benefit from the instruction, as well as the "why's" of doing it the way they break it down.

The accompanying manual is a nice little bonus - once you understand the material, you can use it for reviews and refreshers whenever playing the DVD isn't practical.

I wouldn't pay $80 for it - but I might pay $30.

So where did you get yours? Friend is too ambiguous.

Funny all these positive endorsements coming from folks who didn't buy the thing.

Most DD products have been decent and always worth about 25%-30% their cost.

So it's worth ~37% as much as they charge for it? I look forward to downloading this for free.

I took Pavel at his word when he said in the original RKC book, "All you need is this book, a kettlebell, and a few square feet of space."

That was my last DD purchase.

I think I purchased his joint book. Good stuff. Got in ebook format. The stupidest thing was the password locked Adobe file format. Nonsense.

The thing is that I was dating a Romanian girl at the time and I went to Romania with her to her grandparents' house. Her grandmother was in a nasty accident as a child and sustained injuries that kept her from walking for some months and interfered with her mobility significantly afterward.

When I met 80+ year old woman she was managing her household, large garden, and beehives. I never would have believe she ever had such injuries.

A doctor saw her about a year after her accident and prescribed a joint protocol for her to follow every day. She had been doing it every morning religiously.

It looked nearly identical to Pavel's protocol.

Pavel's or Amosov's from Pavel's book?

Pavel's. IIRC, Amosov's had you doing reps equal to your age in years. I don't think she did more than 20. But the movements were nearly identical.

Strangely, no kettlebells or floor presses.

Luckily, I don't pattern my training after that of 80 year old women.

Ambiguous?!? He's a friend. Jeezus, what do you want, a resume?

OK, I've known him for 15 years and we trade training and health material back and forth all the time. Good guy, trains hard, makes part of his living as a fight choreographer, but he's pushing 60 and his hard living past is catching up to him in the form of nagging pains and aching joints.

Could have gotten by with a one minute version. A load of horseshit for the most part. Can't believe anyone would pay money much less watch this guy for more than 10 minutes. Hard to believe that I did.

Too many lulz to mention.
