Has anyone here been satisfied by any comic's adaptation to cinema?

I saw it yesterday, no need to worry everyone - Watchmen is awesome. :partyman:
The action kept the feeling of comic book violence and athleticism quite well, it's slowed down at time but not the the extent of 300 or the matrix. The acting was brilliant too..
It's a fast forwarded version of the comic so it will miss some of the overall awesomeness that the multiple storylines and background offer, but the changes didn't really feel 'wrong' - and are understandable given the amount of material they had to cover in 2.5 hours.

Was thinking about making the trip to the whiter part of my city. I bet the negro theater is packed full of them. Unless, Tyler Perry is debuting some shit.

Yeah, Madea Goes to Jail is in it's 3rd week, so you better head to the burbs. Plus, it's right after the first of the month...motherfuckers will be out in force who didn't get to see it the last two weeks because their ass was broke.

Think I'm going to drive an hour myself...digital projector and whiter patrons.

What has this country become?

Oh, yeah...

While I was watching it, it was a mix of "is anything going to happen" and "OMG THAT WUZ AWESOME!" When I left the theatre, I was kinda "Meh, that was okay." Then I went home to think about it, and this morning it was "that fucking rocked, I want to see it again."

Critics are divided right down the middle on this, and so are audiences. I can imagine most people not familiar with the material going "WTF?".

I really, really liked it. I don't think anyone could have pulled off what Snyder did...he is a visual genius.

Can't wait to see the director's cut.

I loved it, and thought the same thing about whether somebody who hadn't read it would like it. My brother hadn't read it and thought it was awesome.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

I'm reading it right now. Over halfway through, and I can see where having read it is likely to help watching it. When done I'll go see it.

With some exceptions, I thought it was a very faithful adaptation that had great visuals. Whether that makes for a good movie is another question, and I can see why some people don’t like it, even if they have read the comic book. I thought it was damn cool though. Probably go see it again soon. Maybe even pull out my beat up old copy of the graphic novel and give it another read.

Best thing I've seen in the theater in years and I'll definitely go again while it's out. I'd seen the stills and hoped they would do the book justice. I think they did.

Went with two friends, neither of whom had read it. One loved it and can't wait to read the novel; the other didn't understand the big deal.

I've thought about going to see it again at IMAX. Has anyone heard that the IMAX version is different? I heard that but not sure. Anyway, I changed my mind and will go buy the book instead. I'm sure I'll get the DVD. i'm hearing the director's cut will be 4 hours.

Yes, the director's cut is rumored to be 4+ hours with the "Tales of the Black Freighter" stuff cut into the film.

Did you make the drive to Whitey-ville?

I did. The theater I went to gives you a "Director's Hall" option for some for some of the flicks for a $3.50 surcharge. It's digital--whatever. You get recliners large enough to fit Peach, but the best thing is the negroes can't afford it.

Sunday at 4:00, there were about twenty folks, all well behaved.

Really liked it. The woman I was with never heard of or read anything about it and liked it.

Did anyone else find the Chandleresque narration by Rorschach to be a bit annoying?

No, I stayed in Niggerville, but there was only one nigger in the theater. Didn't see any going to watch Madea either...guess they bumrushed it on opening weekend...friend told me the line was around the corner opening weekend.

The Rorschach narration was well-done, imo...a good translation from book to film...about as good as it could be done I think.

The things I didn't like:

1. Dr. Manhattan's porn cock. They should have just put the black strap thing on him for the whole movie.
2. What the fuck Snyder was thinking by having Lenoard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' playing during the graphic sex scene is beyond me. I damn near laughed out loud. The song choice is only made worse by the fact that everyone remembers that song from Shrek.
3. He overdid the rape scene. He didn't beat her ass unconscious like that in the book. I was like, "Ok, I think she's out", and then there's like three more head slams to the pool table. Could have used more subtlety, imo. It's a difficult subject matter to begin with...no sense turning it into an over the top beatdown.
4. The guy who played Veidt doesn't suck horse cock quite as bad as the internet fanboys made him out to, but he was hopelessly miscast, nonetheless. I can think of about 20 actors who would have been more appropriate.
5. The dogs fighting over the little girl's leg bone with the sock and shoe still on it...didn't need to see that. I know that's a scene from the book, but Gibbons didn't present it quite that graphically.

I never read it, but that flick was awesome. Rorshach had the best line in the movie..."you're locked in here with ME"

It's quite amazing how the crowd reacted when he greased the guy and then said that. Very much won the hearts and minds of the audience at that point.

Yeah, Alan Moore explicitly said in an interview that he wrote Watchmen to do and show off things that comics can do well that movies and literature can't. That's probably why he asked to have his name taken off the credits.

I'll go watch it though, and I'll probably enjoy it. If it's even half as good as the comics, it'll be pretty good.

I had just finished the book when I went, and really enjoyed the movie. Very faithful to the book. I agree with most of Kazuya's points, particularly on the rape scene and the little girl's shoe scene. Unnecessary.

When Alan did the book, CGI didn't exist. The shots of the surface of Mars were pretty phenomenal.

As a huge fan of the graphic novel, I still remain awed by the whole movie. However, the more I think about it the more I’m convinced that Snyder could have easily made this a PG-13 movie that would have appealed to a wider audience while still creating a visual masterpiece that is loyal to the source material.

Point of fact, it’s mostly Snyder’s variances from the source material that gives this thing a freaking R-rating.

1. Already talked about the rape scene.
2. Little girl leg bone…nuff said.
3. Guys arms sawed off…in the novel his throat was cut. Still bad, but c’mon.
4. In the novel, it is implied that The Comedian assassinated JFK. In the movie, we actually see this with a horribly graphic recreation of the Dallas motorcade with brains all over the trunk and Jackie trying to scoop them up in a panic.
5. It is implied that the lesbian member of the Minutemen was found murdered with her lover. In the movie, we see the graphic aftermath with two women’s bloody bodies on a bed.
6. All of the sex was very lowkey in the novel. In the movie, we get to see Silk Spectre work that knob polisher, and Nite Owl’s thrusting bare ass. Again, could have been done much more tastefully. Think love scene, not sex scene.
7. Blue penis…cover it up…nothing lost.
8. Lee Iococca getting shot between the eyes…not even in the novel.
9. The Dr Manhattan scene where he’s in the bad guys’s nightclub and just explodes guys with blood flying everywhere and dude’s skeleton plastered to the ceiling. Again, this is in the novel, but it’s NOWHERE this graphic.

Snyder should have called it ‘This is Watchmen’ because he took the novel and ran it through his mind’s eye which evidently “goes to eleven.”

Again…loved it myself, but this approach alienated ¾ of its potential audience and leaves the fans with a movie that will be forgotten by Hollywood in just a few months.
