Florida
I'm taking a family vacation in Florida next week. We're staying in Kissimmee, so of course we'll be doing the disney thing for a couple of days. I was wondering if anyone has any "road less traveled" suggestions. I have 2 kids, 8 and 5, and a wife, so gay bathhouses and truck stops are out of the question. Any input is appreciated.

Are you interested in traveling for 2 or 3 hours?
If you go west, and are interested in some nature/beach time consider Caladesi Island State Park and Honeymoon Island State Park. They can be accessed from each other. Good trails with lots of interesting creatures and excellent beaches.
If you go east, consider St. Augustine. It's America's oldest city and has a good vibe. If either of your kids is a boy, there is a very cool old stone fort to explore and play around on.

We spent a day on cocoa beach. You can find entrances to free beach away from the parks. I was not going to pay to play in the ocean, that's crazy.

My experience is that unless there are some spring break leftovers, 90% of what you'll see on the beach is a mix of pasty yankees and pasty fat yankees. There will be a smattering of shriveled prune geezers with skin so tanned that you could use it to make a nice pair of chaps.cunch wrote:I heard Cocoa beach was dirty, but not in a good way. Which beaches are best for the, uhh, "scenery" and not full of fat old people.
St. Augustine has a beach and a college so that may be your best bet.
