May be it true. But movie based on book "The Requiem on Convoy PQ-17",by Valentin Pikul. May be he was first who wrote about it in Soviet Union, i don't know. He believed and readers of his book believed :) it very good book, and those who read it drops some tears - its true.

On January 31, 2006, Vasily Zaytsev was reburied on Mamayev Kurgan with full military honors. Zaytsev's dying wish was to be buried at the monument to the defenders of Stalingrad. His coffin was carried next to a monument where his famous quote is written: "For us there was no land beyond (the) Volga."

The telescopic sight from Heinz Thorvald's (Konig's) rifle,(Nazi sniper) allegedly Zaytsev's most treasured trophy, is still exhibited in the Moscow armed forces museum today.

They say he had possibly as many as 500 kills.

I read a lot of memoirs. Veterans was asked about this - all veterans said that "If they didn't go forward, your Russian masters behind you killed them." its a myth. There very many veterans was asked. No one of them evere saw evil NKVDists with machine guns behind attackers.
And some of them said, would they seen such nkvdist with machine gun, they would easily kill him - its easier than attack.

Probably talking about "Penal Brigades", where convicts were pushed into bad situations. Heard that the Chekist scum used to drive them onward with machineguns, probably artillery too.

I don't recall the Historian's name but there was also a penal brigade setup for waist and tail gunners on Soviet bombers, these positions were also assigned to convicts.

My Vector Analysis Prof, who was Jewish, complained that the Soviets put Jews "in the front lines" because "The Nazis would shoot us on the spot so we fought harder". As I understand it, our racists were generally too stupid for that and often restricted blacks to non-combat roles because some whites were repelled by the thought of fighting side by side with blacks.

Blacks actually had to fight for the opportunity to fight for their country. I'm open for correction from the historians among us.
