I used to read the Soviet Sports Science Review (or whatever the fuck it was called) that he published and yes, the Soviets were not afraid of carbs. All of their athletes, and especially their endurance athletes had a carefully monitored, relatively high carbohydrate intake.

I was at a Yessis seminar a few years back that had Verkoshansky participating via phone. Verkoshansky said American sports scientists were mostly clueless, but Mike Mentzer had some good ideas. Seriously.

You are the second person I know to relate that story. The Mentzer love was the only thing mentioned about the seminar.
