The Electric Church- Jeff Sommers
This forum appears to be bereft of book reviews, so I'll write one. This book is quite simply the balls. Mix equal parts of hard boiled crime noir (a la Charlie Huston/Victor Gischler), along with William Gibson-esque sci fi, and a heavy dose of dystopic fiction, and you've got his book. It's apparently Somer's first, and it's fucking awesome. The protagonist is a badass gun-for-hire living in NYC, and he's hired to kill the head of the Electric Church, which is the 2nd biggest world religion, wherein cloaked robotic Monks with human brains kill people and forcibly convert them. If that doesn't sound like a huge helping of kickass to you, then you fucking suck.

Seen it on the shelves, but haven't read it yet.
You tried any Richard K. Morgan?

I've seen Broken Angels on the shelves, but never even picked it up. I'll have to check him out.

Start with 'Altered Carbon'...if you like that then you'll like his other stuff. Trippy ideas, sex, and violence...it's hard to beat.
I'm gonna give your suggestion another look.

Good times. I'm currently reading the Electric Church and Boneshaker by Cherie Priest. Boneshaker's a combo of steampunk and zombies, which is a recipe for awesome, in my book.

Read the book a month or so ago, thought it was pretty good. Thing is, the "hero" is a tough guy, alright, but he's human enough that he has to work pretty hard to get the job done, and he needs a lot of help and gets some lucky breaks. Pretty convincing depiction of Future Dystopia in some ways is the best part of the book - makes "1984" look like "Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm".ChAoSnPAIN wrote:This forum appears to be bereft of book reviews, so I'll write one. The book ends with the implication that there will be for a sequel. Apparently it's is already out - new book in the series is "The Digital Plague". I plan to pick it up some payday soon.

Really?
Jesus. Just finished Electric Church today. Good cyberpunk noire. You'll find Richard Morgan's Takeshi Koveks novels to be in the same vein. I've like the Morgan books better, but not by much. I liked it enough to grab the next book in the series next time I'm going to by a book. Beware, the fantasy novel by Morgan is full of graphic gay sex. I had wondered why only one library in a 30 mile radius had it. Fucking censors.
I just looked at that Boneshaker today, looked good.

If you can find it, Richard Kadrey's Metrophage is a great read. His latest "Sandman Slim" is good, but it's more in the urban fantasy genre.

Sweet. I'm adding all of those to my amazon wish list.
If I made it through Sam Delany's Hogg, I can make it through any amount of gay sex, haha. Read that on a drive to Myrtle Beach sitting in between to evangelist Christians. THAT was amusing.
