Haven't seen Bernard Cornwall mentioned yet. The Sharpe series is really good as is the King Arthur and Thief series. He writes historical fiction that's more on the realistic/gritty side. I grew up reading Wilbur Smith but I like Cornwall better now.

I can't believe one of you is getting the entire Tarzan series. I would kill for the whole Mars series for my boy.

"Black arrow" read many times.
I would add "Red Orm" good book, good humor.

I liked the Horatio Hornblower series as a kid, reading the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey–Maturin series (Master and commander) off and on now, and like it better.

Oh, hey. That made me remember this: "Death Watch."

http://www.amazon.com/Deathwatch-Robb-W ... 172&sr=8-2

It's a long cat-and-mouse game through the desert between a college student and a hunter, who needs to get rid of him in order to conceal a crime. I'd say it's more appropriate for teens than pre-teens.

Quest for Fire, one of my favorites. Also, Og Son of Fire.

The Raft, by Eddie Rickenbacker, seven guys on a small life raft for 20+ days before they were rescued. He came to speak when I was in High School.

^^ this.

Books I loved as a kid and some I still do:

The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
The Merlin books by Mary Stewart
Anything "Gor" by John Norman
Split Infinity and the "Color" books by Piers Anthony
It by Stephen King
Elric Saga by Moorcock
The Belgariad by David Eddings

As a pre-teen I really liked the Alfred Hitchcock's "3 Investigators" books.
