I've read almost everything Vachss has written. Unfortunately, while his writing remains strong, the stories he's choosing to tell are not as strong as his earlier work. Worth a read, but, ultimately lukewarm.
The Plot:
Timothy "Sugar" Caine is a thief, and a good one. He is a massive man who works out to remain strong and fit. He is accused and convicted of a rape he didn't commit. He has an alibi, but to use it, he'd have to rat out his partners in a burglary. He does the time.
Afterwards, he gets involved with the planner of this last job, who has some loose ends to tie up.

I used to read him but never read fiction anymore.
Shella was fucking classic.
His Batman novel was terrible.

The guy is an attorney. He represents children. His first books always had scenes where where some predator was preying on women or children. So they were written, I think, in a kind of rage. Maybe they were more deeply felt and maybe that's why they seemed stronger.
