Joe Lansdale's new Hap Collins and Leonard Pine book is called Devil Red.

Outstanding and entertaining, as per usual.

Just got most of 'em in epub format for my Nook and am rereading them.

I came in at Mucho Mojo and had to search for Savage Season for quite some time before I found it.

FYI Lansdale has a story in the just released "LA Noire" collection from Mullholland books. I guess the book ties into the game of the same name. I love crime fiction and this looks like a great collection.

The e-book version of the collection is free today at Apple, Amazon, etc.

I keep meaning to read the Hap and Leonard books. I've only read "The Bottoms", which was great. The others are on my never ending TBR list of books and authors.

I guess that e-book is free all week. I got the Apple version, but I think B&N has the same deal as Amazon, Apple, etc.

The Bottoms was very good. Hap and Leonard are not like that but you'll appreciate the author's style and facility with filthy dialogue and violence.

I just recently reread all the Hap and Leonard novels. I was unexpectedly struck by the evolution of the characters and the storytelling...it goes from normal to gonzo, which, in Lansdale's case, isn't any kind of criticism.

Savage Season was very much like The Bottoms. Classic Lansdale, small story. Lansdale kind of danced around Leonard's homosexuality a bit.
Mucho Mojo, being the first Hap and Leonard novel I read, is still the best introduction to the series. Lansdale appears to say "Fuck it, IN YOUR FACE!" with Leonard's gayness. Story gets bigger.
Two Bear Mambo. Here's where the stories started to get bigger, and the Hap and Leonard interaction became established. It seemed so solid in Mucho Mojo, that it took another reading for me to see it start to develop

Did you read Bad Chili? Wikipedia tells me that was the one between Two Bear Mambo and Rumble Tumble. It was my introduction to the series, and I still like it as much as any of them.
