OWS situation reminds me of the Solidarity, Polish trade union that emerged in 1980. Their actions and policies went against the government, which directly ticked the Supreme Master at the time, Soviet Union. Soviet press smear campaign against Solidarity was very similar to the coverage of OWS in the US media. They would find every possible flaw of the members and concentrate on their negative actions. The reaction of the population was also very similar: even though 99% of the Soviets were in shit and Solidarity protested against poor living and working conditions, at least two thirds were spiteful of the movement. Mind you, the delivery of information was very skewed. The reaction remoinds me of the Stockholm Syndrome, where the victim identifies with the kidnapper and literally takes his side.

I already mentioned that when I first read 1984 I though it was about Soviet Russia. Twenty years later I realize I was wrong. USA is doing well to catch up with the USSR: the right of indefinite detention, rigging the election, annihilation of protests, lying media, fuelling of patriotism for the purposes of internal and external political goals and persistent obsession with spies - err, terrorists - all very much in the spirit of Uncle Iosif.

Sure, but my solution has a snowballs chance in hell of being implemented or popular. Some of my solutions, but not all.

Government

Repeal the 16 & 17 amendments
New amendment imposing term limits on congress and the senate
New amendment- limiting political contributions and activity to indivual citizens
New Ammendment establishing the USA as a neutral country

Abolish the Federal Reserve
Abolish public employee Unions
End the welfare state- Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.
End Freddy and Fannie Mae
End all subsidies- agriculture, Business, & education
End all foreign aid
Abolish the departments of Energy, education, and homeland security
Withdrawal of all troops from around the globe-except those killing rag heads
Declaration of war against radical Islamic groups-while neutral, we put the savages on notice we mean business

Culture

Foster a return to the American ideals of hard work, self suficiency, and civic virtue
Stop treating the poor with kid gloves- as Benjamin Franklin once said- they need to be driven from poverty. The problem is not lack of opportunity, but culture.
End this empty headed notion that everyone needs to go to college or has to go to college to be successful
Everyone leaves everyone else alone- stop meddling in people's private and family affairs

The biggest changes are taking the stick away from politicians. Without direct taxes to control people, politicians would mostly be ignored. Limit their terms to fuck with their plans for accumulating power and limit the harm they can cause.
I think I would agree with most of that, but I don't even pretend to have enough knowledge to be sure. How should one go about to achieve these kind of changes, if not by protesting the current situation?

Yes. Well aware of the differences between Solidarity and OWS though.

So what's the take away of this alleged, world changing movement and all of the hype that surrounded it during its ramp-up and peak?

Oakland's tenuous financial position got worse. Same in a lot of cities. Will most likely mean service cutbacks to the most vulnerable-- all in the name of protesting the 1%.

No, it's not. If it was, most of the thousands who casually post such BS would be too scared shitless to say a word.

So a police state suddenly springs up from nowhere? That's how they come to be? It couldn't be that it slowly encroaches until eventually "thousands who casually post" become too scared shitless to say a word?

I agree. Thank God there is a Constitution that makes their work difficult, and people who are working equally hard to prevent the Police State. This battle will continue as long as we have our nation.

Ethics of 'Autonomous' Combat Drones Debated

UPI
Researchers say a drone aircraft being tested by the U.S. Navy that could conduct a combat mission without human involvement raises troubling ethical questions.
The drone, designed to land on the deck of an aircraft carrier, operates not only with no pilot in the cockpit but with no pilot at all, raising the specter of a pre-programmed semi-independently operating machine capable of wreaking mayhem on its own.

You are making the Slippery Slope argument. The problem with that is you can never set foot anywhere on the mountain. It makes all distinctions meaningless, which makes you stupid in the real world (but a genius in academia).

If we are now a Police State, when were we a Free State? Did we fight WWII and then oppose the USSR just because we wanted to impose our Police State over their Police State...there was no moral dimension to those wars?

Or, for conservatives, because you can not own a nuclear device the Second Amendment is meaningless?

There is a subtle difference between slippery slope as a logical fallacy and the idea of precedent. Fact is, that over time and much more quickly since 9/11, people have accepted the precedent of increased intrusion into their lives and their property. The US has become a de facto Police State, it is just a lot more tolerant and erratic one when it comes to the middle and upper classes.

The coercive state is always a "precedent" to a police state; but we push back, as the Constitution provides.
Maybe you would prefer living in Somalia? I hear there's no state there.

Jesus, people! A little perspective.

First Amendment: In this last generation, the internet has allowed more Free Speech than ever in the history of Man. Every asshole can post, blog & protest to his heart's content. The media's "monopoly" on public discussion no longer exists.

And there is unprecedented tolerance of all sorts of behavior: Interracial marriage, interfaith marriage, pron, cross-dressing, Newtism, Rantism, Paul-istinianism*...the list is endless.

Second Amendment: Recent SC rulings acknowledge the individual right to keep & bear arms, and concealed carry is the law in many more states than it has been.

Third: !

Fourth: Takes continuous work. But technology, like video cameras, help as much as hurt.

Fifth: Radically expanded over time. In the news today, a Mexican got cut loose on DUI because he didn't get his right to challenge a blood test translated into Spanish. (!)

***
I will admit, the 9th & 10th are quite weak. But they always have been.

Enough. Out.

*Here's a semi-viable candidate for President, who wants to prune back the federal gov't to the stump. Why isn't he in the Gulag?

Johno,

i'm scrawling this on the back of a rat skin parchment from Guantanamo ....

First they came for the heroin addicts,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a heroin addict.

Then they came for the coke heads,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a coke head.

Then they came for the potheads,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Pothead.

Then they came for the gun owners,
and I didn't speak out because I didn't own one.

Then they came for my me
and I was unarmed and they had a FISA warrant.

Blaidd, you have convinced me. Ever since they outlawed H, the US has been a Police State.

Thank you. I'll miss you. I will contact your ACLU lawyer so he can smuggle in Strongman templates & pron.
