Re: The couch thread
a firefighter needs to spend hours in the weight room like a powerlifter needs to spend hours fighting fires.
Despite the crackhead mantra, specificity matters. a litte running and a little basic weight room work is great for FFers. SM type stuff with a lean toward some of the more endurancebased events is best imho.

I'll take it a bit further, once a firefighter gets fit and learns what it takes to stay fit, then their time can be better spent learning the job. Fuck all else if they can't do the job.

That applies to just about everyone. Way too much sense and not enough hardcore dumbshit for most.Dan Martin wrote:

When I waste my breath trying to talk my coworkers into doing something I try to stress that it's training to make life easier. They see me doing what they consider ridiculously heavy stuff(I know it's not) and they think that's what they have to do. I tell then a walk everyday and some light circuits would be enough to reach their goals and enjoy a better quality of life.

Re: The couch thread
I had that same issue with my ex-wife. She could see me getting stronger, fitter, and as a result, healthier and happier. But she flat-out refused to squat, bench and deadlift, and do things like sled pulling. And I told her, "What's heavy for me is different from what's heavy for you, and when you get started, you're scaled way back, using much, much lighter weights, fewer rounds, etc. but that's okay because you'll still get a training effect from it."Ed Zachary wrote:That applies to just about everyone. She'd just say "Nah. I can do better doing the eliptical. Everybody knows if you wanna burn calories and get thin you have to do LOTS of cardio."
Saw her recently. For the first time in a while. It hasn't worked yet.

I have an uncle who is a retired FDNY captain. He was highly decorated and always worked in very active neighborhoods, Brooklyn ghetto neighborhoods. He ran and swam, and never lifted a weight. He's 70 now, and rides a bike and does machine circuits at the Y.

Re: The couch thread
You have to want to train. Crossfit provides an environment and dynamic that makes you want to train.
Maybe people need that to keep consistent. Others, mostly the knuckledragger and antisocial alpha types, don't, and plug away at their goals, suffering and toiling in silence, while the other gym goers either watch with trepidation or ignore the visible efforts of excruciating work.

Would you rather learn from Steve or Rif? Plus how many RKCs actually live in their cars and bathe in streams and shit?

After all the pages, all the post, the truth is finally pointed out. That is why they can charge 160 a month, why when every other mom and pop gym is underwater they keep growing.Shafpocalypse Now wrote: Crossfit provides an environment and dynamic that makes you want to train.

Re: The couch thread
I noticed there was no time limit on the "AMRAP". What is it for ...20min......60min....1 day...until the weakness leaves your body....death?
If that was that a real workout, then I don't know whether to feel vindicated or amazed at the absurdity.

Re: fire fighting. Most of the time it does not require brute strength, but the experience & judgement to properly use your crew and equipment. Then, every so often, you have to survive jumping off a ladder, falling through stairs, having a ceiling fall in on your head or pulling a 300+ lb. Beluga out of a car wreck. Or having a 5 inch supply line break loose & knock you on your face.
I don't know how you train for that kind of resilience. Probably Crossfit.
