On Monday, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health released study results showing that red meat consumption was associated with a higher risk of early death. The more red meat -- beef, pork or lamb, for the purposes of the research -- study participants reported they ate, the more likely they were to die during the period of time that data collection took place (more than 20 years).http://www.latimes.com/health/boostersh ... 1706.story
I rest my case.

that is a fucking stupid study. Lumping all different preps of red meat together, then not controlling for whatever shit people ate with or after it, renders this type of study absolutely fucking worthless.

The article doesn't say much about the actual study which concluded that people who ate more meat were more likely to be fat fucks who were less likely to eat fruit and veggies and more likely to sit on their asses, smoke and drink. Nice correlation but, as usual, the media screws it up when reporting it to a public that is unable to focus on more than one....

That was exactly what I was going to point out, so maybe I should have said 'so much wrong with that headline...'
Obviously, mortality based studies always have more gravitas. However, so few studies look at nutrition and its role in quality of life. If you're alive and not living life like a savage, who gives a shit?

What he said. The media in this country have no fucking clue how or what to report in medicine or public health or nutrition anymore. Read Ben Goldacre's stuff ("Bad Science: Quacks, Hacks and Big Pharmaflacks") for some clues on how to cut through the bullshit.

I like a good steak once in a while, or pork BBQ occasionally, and bacon is like manna from heaven.
I will admit I had always shied away from Veal, because they were killing baby cows and all. Then one time I was on a business trip in France and in this restaurant we had 2 choices for the dinner entree, some odd fish they couldn't explain what it was, or a Veal Tenderloin. So I went for the veal.
Oh my God, best meal ever. If you think regular beef tenderloin is good, you have to try a good veal tenderloin.

Veal, is a by-product of the dairy industry. It's a waste of resources to raise bulls they don't need.

The French eat a lot of meat. Which is why their average life expectancy is a mere 80.7 years.

I'm not sure people in public health and nutrition know how to study it either. I read the study over lunch, and SAR is absolutely right about it. It had more coauthors with doctorates than it had pages, and I think one of our better undergrads could do just as well working alone.
Sometimes I wonder if referees in public health do anything other than look for their own name in the list of citations.

They're experts because they were required to take an Intro to STATA course in their PhD programs.
