RIP Titanic
100 years ago today, 1,500 people lost their lives when an iceberg gouged a 200 foot long hole in the hull of the Titanic. The ship stayed afloat for only 2 hours and 40 minutes. The panic to get on the lifeboats as the ship was fast going down was intense. There were clubbings and even shootings on board. Those lucky to get on the small craft were rowed away and watched the stern's rise and fall - and the sudden sinking sucked some of the boats back towards the scene. They then had to endure, on a flat calm night, the terrified agonising screams of the men, women and children freezing to death and crying for help in the icy waters. That haunted the survivors until they died. The word "disaster" is overused nowadays. That truly was such. RIP.

For an interesting bit of information on "why" the lookouts didn't see the iceberg until about thirty seconds before they ran into it watch the program on the National Geographic Channel. Hint: cold water mirage.

Re: RIP Titanic
That happened when I was in university - no way that it happened 100 years ago.
