Conclusion: GSP and Anderson Silva suck, are bitches, and are not true warriors.

Argument: I just saw some news story on GSP vowing to "fight again in 2012!!!" after basically spraining his knee in 2011. Fucking Nogeura gets his upper arm broke clean in half in January 2012 and he's now scheduled to fight again in July against a kickboxer who could easily kick that arm and break it again. But GSP needs to play in swimming pools, do gymnastics, and get MRIs on his knee every week for the next 12 months before he's willing to fight.

GSP is also a bitch because he steadfastly refuses to step up and fight at middleweight. He wants to be considered the GOAT but he won't risk losing. He has said he'd fight Anderson Silva only AFTER he'd gained weight to 185 AND spent some time with that weight to get ready for that fight. Hell, Andy will be retired by then. But GSP's ego won't let him take a fight at MW against a lesser-known opponent. What if he lost? His legacy would be tarnished. He'd look like the guy who was great at WW but couldn't beat mid-level guys at MW. The reality is, he'll never fight A. Silva and he'll likely never fight anyone at middleweight ever.

He's not a true fighter. A true fighter cleans out the division and then calls out guys above them. BJ did it. Dan Henderson fights anyone, any weight class, and held 2 belts at once b/c he doesn't give a fuck what you weigh, he'll fight. Nick Diaz would fight GSP in someone's backyard just because.

And Anderson Silva is no better. He desperately wants to be seen as the GOAT but he won't call out Jon Jones. He said he wouldn't fight at LHW b/c his buddy Machida is a LHW, but now Machida is out of the picture. So why won't Silva step up? He tried his best to avoid rematching Chael Sonnen but now that's on the calendar. If he wins, what's left? Michael Bisping? Stupid. He's said he has about 4 fights left in him and then he'll retire. He's trying to avoid losing at this point. A real warrior would call out the best and go after them.

GSP and Silva suck balls. I hope they both lose. I hope Chael mauls Silva, and the next person who fights GSP mindfucks him by starting the fight with nothing but leg kicks. GSP would flip the fuck out like he did when Shields poked his eye.

While I agree with the premise of this thread, you know that Anderson Silva has already cracked a couple 205'ers, right?

You are right that GSP is not a fighter. He's a martial artist and a brand. He's a nervous guy - extremely so. He'll take a fight and spend a long time working out how not to lose it. Winning pretty doesn't interest him. He suffers from extraordinarily poor confidence and is terrified of being humiliated. This makes him prepare like a maniac, makes him hard to beat and makes him "boring". He won't ever fight Silva.

BJ was a purer fighter. He beat the snot out of GSP in their first fight but gassed and GSP ground it out. As fans we admire the BJ attitude. But we also slag off the bone-headed and lazy qualities of many of these "pure fighters". We're like the schoolyard fight watchers, eager for someone else to do something stupid for our amusement. They don't, we're unhappy. They do, we'll watch and laugh at them.

There's something fundamentally unsavoury about Dana White and the business of making fights. He kept pitting Tito into matches hoping he'd get mauled. It was public calling out and schoolyard bullshit from the mouthy "fixer" who doesn't fight himself. GSP and Silva are good enough not to take the bait or have to do something stupid.

Anderson won't fight Jones, unless the UFC throws some ridiculous Pacquiao/Mayweather money at him, if and when he manages to get past Sonnen, probably Hector Lombard, and then GSP.

Good assessment. MMA is one of the few sports where the fanboys almost completely discount W-L records when discussing who is good.

baffled: Yes I know. Silva handily beat that Irvin fellow and then stole Forrest Griffin's soul. But now Jones has stolen everyone's soul at 205 so, naturally, Silva should step up and ask for the fight that would cement whether or not he IS the GOAT. My point is, Silva is playing it safe. His striking ability is phenomenal, unquestionably, but his record is also littered with wins over a very weak 185 division and when he finally faced a solid wrestler (Sonnen), he lost. And although he was willing to fight GSP (a little guy who would be lucky to climb to 185), he would not himself face a bigger guy (Jones, who weighs in at 205 but walks around at 225, which is similar to Silva's size). Silva is coasting.

He won't fight until his knee is 100%. So he won't like it. But he will have a strategy to win that he'll stick to. He's nothing if not incredibly disciplined.

The fight I'd like is Silva v Jones.

My take on Jones is that his reach is his strength and weakness. Up to now, fighters have hung back to kicking distance for him. So he's relaxed and able to kick and they're tense, tiring themselves and occasionally getting kicked. To win, the smaller man has to pursue Jones with relentless intensity so that they're BOTH in striking range ALL the time. This is exhausting for BOTH fighters and negates the reach advantage. It'll be a brave guy who'll do it. But anything less is ceding advantage. Ideally, the smaller guy would decide to win it in 2 rounds and fuck conserving energy. Just take him the fuck out. No rest. No mercy.

But I don't think he/Jackson would think someone would come in and just go hog wild on that knee. And even if they did plan for it, I think once it happened, yo'ud see GSP adjust/freak out, like he did when Shields scratched his eye.

I agree more or less, but getting close is dangerous: his short range elbows, his knees, and his ability to get the takedown via judo trip or throw (see, Stephen Bonnar).

I agree that the best strategy is to stay in his face relentlessly, like Sonnen did to Silva, and Henderson may try that, but Jones is excellent in the clinch...He'll be hard to beat.

The thing JOnes doesn't have is KO power, and Silva has that for days (or, timing/precision, at least). I think Silva KO's Jones. Too bad he's too big of a pussy to call out Jones.

I've seen Jones and Silva on the same stage. Jones dwarfs him. It'd be a cool fight but wouldn't suit Silva.

Evans isn't very good. But showed how to beat Jones. Come forward. Jones isn't good close in. He's good from kicking range and elbow range. That's NOT close in. You get really close to him - in his fucking face - he won't be able to throw glancing elbows or front kicks. It'll come down to claustrophobic short, breathless intense shit-fucking battle fighting. Jones might be great at that too. And win. But at least the guy without the 85 inch reach has a chance by shortening the distance. The shorter man can wind up a blow faster than Jones if they're chest to chest. It'll be done and the era of lanky domination will turn and we'll all marvel at the small Aldo-like champion who becomes "unbeatable" for a year or so.

I think a person that wars like that has the best chance at beating Jones (aside from the puncher's chance that a KO-artist always has). I just see Jones taking down anyone that gets too close. I didn't see the Rashad fight. Sounds like he did pretty good, at first at least, but that he too fought mostly on the outside. It also sounds like he tried to get inside for some takedowns but they were easily stuffed. I didn't see it though.

Thinking of the current UFC champs, none are dirty, in your face fighters who live in the clinch (eg Randy Couture). They are mostly strikers who fight from range (except GSP who fights from a textbook).
