It's still pretty densely populated. I ended up staying in a motel there by accident. There's a memorial in a nearby park and most of the people still live and work in the area so it still has some of the flavor. LOTS of dentists there for some reason, if I remember correctly.

The part is out by the airport, right?

Holy shit Dave, that must have been crazy. Helluva lot different than even accidentally getting a hotel in East St. Louis vs St. Louis.
The article states:
By the early 1980s it was notorious for brothels, casinos, cocaine parlours and opium dens. It was also famous for food courts which would serve up dog meat and had a number of unscrupulous dentists who could escape prosecution if anything went wrong with their patients.

Indeed. Stories from Hong Kong in the late 80s are really cool. I found the area on Google Maps and have been there - it has been completely razed and is fairly sterile now. I want to hear more about what it was like before they tore it down.

i went after they tore it down. It's near the old airport. But it's still an unusual place because it still has some of the old feel to it. the old parts of Hong Kong still have an amazing density rate. The hotel was a "package deal" from the airlines and they didn't bother to mention where it was. Really inconvenient but more quiet than the island.
If you get a chance when you're there and want a break from the hustle and bustle, it's worth a bus ride.
