A couple of considerations to help you decide between diesel and gas:

Diesels cost more initialy; cost more for maintenance; last longer; typically gets better mileage than gas with comparable towing capacity; lots of torque for towing.

Gas power costs less initially; costs less for maintenance; with a 12000# capacity it will get deplorable mileage; acceleration will be better than diesel when not towing; not as good as diesel when towing.

So you have to evaluate whether it is a daily driver; how often you will tow; ect.

At 12000# towing capacity you are getting close to the 3500 or F350 territory depending on rear gear and type of trailer; they can be had in single rear weel versions if you don't want a dually.

For that amount of weight you will definitely want to go with a diesel. The GMC Allison tranny is a solid piece of gear too.

If you go with Ford avoid their 6.0 diesel at all costs. The old 7.3 is a great engine if you can find a used one in good shape. (I don't know anything about the new 6.7.)

It goes without saying that if you get a Dodge, get the manual transmission.

Wtf are you towing?
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Add a lift kit and weld a cowcatcher/ram on the front and steel shutters/wire grilles on the windows and windscreen and you have yourself a zombie crusher deluxe.

There's always ton of test videos on youtube each comparing others in tests.

My sister in law works in the dyno lab at Ford's proving grounds, and was involved in testing the big F350 diesel against the competitors. While she'll be biased as all hell, she said, on their test track (the one in the video) and in the dyno testing, the Ford was first, then the GM then the Dodge.

She hauls a horse trailer all over with her F350 super duty diesel, no problems.
