Coffee buzz: Study finds java drinkers live longer
Email this Story

May 16, 7:30 PM (ET)

By MARILYNN MARCHIONE

MILWAUKEE (AP) - One of life's simple pleasures just got a little sweeter. After years of waffling research on coffee and health, even some fear that java might raise the risk of heart disease, a big study finds the opposite: Coffee drinkers are a little more likely to live longer. Regular or decaf doesn't matter.

Disagree with the decaf part.

No shit. Although I drink it because I like the taste, decaf coffee is as bad an idea as beer without alcohol.

Roasting your own only makes it better.

Hey Darth, this is gonna sound cunty but there's something a little biochemically fucked up about french press style/boiled coffee prep. Now I can't speak too knowledgeably about this but there's an oil present called cafestol that can elevate LDL. A paper filter catches most of it. Only reason I mention it is I've got a buddy whose HDL/LDL/triglyceride numbers were completely fucked up. Doctor couldn't figure out what was up...they talked about diet and my buddy mentioned he'd drink a couple of the big french press stype pots a day. The doctor told him to stop and switch to drip style and within a short period of time his numbers were okay. Just FYI. I think if you smoke some weed thought it counteracts this problem.

This is the correct answer. All else is savagery.

I gave up coffee for a while earlier this week. You can all burn in hell.

I did this. It sucked. But then I woke up and brewed more and all was well. \:D/

Whatever happened to RSW03? Did he ever learn that three of those a day puts the kibosh on the diet efforts?

I gave up coffee once. It was a disappointment. My life was no better so I went back

I also gave up beer (mostly)...It was a great improvement..this was even more disappointing.

The first few days were miserable. I need to get back to the point where it wakes me up. Hopefully a few more weeks will do the trick.

I'm surprised you aren't being more of a dick.

I did a week long ride through Baja, with no access to good coffee...after 3 days I was dipping Folgers Crystals like Copenhagen to stave off the headaches and silent screaming

I am too hippie for a car.

Besides, the coffee news was broken to me by a colleague who was drinking some Starbucks concoction at the time - my response was pretty much what I posted.

My french press turns out good for me nearly 25% of the time - a huge gamble in the morning that I am unwilling to risk.

Shit a couple of pots a day!

2-4 cups a day tops and 1 or 2 is from the machine. The Woman does not use the Press, It's a mechanical issue I think.

Or you can still use the press, just pour the coffee through a paper filter. Problem solved.

I did it at a time when I didn't have to deal with too many people for a few days. Around here is another story-- who would notice?

Headaches were a bitch for the first three days though. Now not a big deal.

Absolutely!

For those of you who agree, I've been roasting my own for about 6 months this way (see video). Since my popper was only $20, a pretty inexpensive way to go. Works great for smaller batches (about a half cup at a time), only takes about 5-10 minutes per batch (depending on roast level) and is better than any coffee you can buy due to freshness level. I usually roast enough for about 4 days, and roast while lifting, so no time lost. Several green coffee suppliers out there on the interwebs selling for ~$6/lb depending on bulk quantity purchased and origin. Great thing is that green coffee is good for about a year unroasted, so you really only need to buy about every 6 months to ensure freshness and spread any shipping out across a larger order. Keeps the corporate ass-wipes at Charbucks outta my press (shudder). I buy from Sweet Marias FWIW.
