PSA tests are crap?

Post by Turdacious »

Men shouldn't be screened for prostate cancer with a common blood test, a widely followed federal advisory panel recommended on Monday. But the report isn't likely to quell a dispute about whether the test's risks outweigh its potential benefits.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended a "D" grade for prostate-specific-antigen, or PSA, testing which has been widely used for almost two decades to screen men for prostate cancer. Previously the task force had recommended against PSA testing for men age 75 and older. Now the recommendation extends to all ages.

A "D" rating means "there is moderate or high certainty that the service has no net benefit or that the harms outweigh the benefits," the group's website says. It also is a recommendation "against the service."

The Task Force report, published Monday online in Annals of Internal Medicine, said PSA screening detects many asymptomatic or slow-growing cases of cancer that won't cause men any problems in their lifetimes. Treatments for those cancers can include surgery and radiation and can cause side effects such as impotence or urinary incontinence.

I know a guy who is fucked up BECAUSE his doctor did the test but didn't give him the proper results. Turns out that his cancer was fast growing and spread.

PSA tests don't mean shit. I got pressured into getting the biopsy once. Got an infection that nearly did me in. Not until I took myself off the antibiotic and let my own immune system do its job did the infection disappear. FUCK Allopathic medicine forever!

without the psa (a succession of psas, actually), i would not have gotten a biopsy, (two biopsies actually).

without a biopsy, i would not know i have cancer.

if i didn't know i have cancer, i might not worry so much.

i could have surgery or radiation treatment and, perhaps, worry less. i would, however, pee my pants for a while and probably be forever impotent. except when i inject my dick with the magic stiffener.

that's unappealing, so given my small and apparently unaggressive cancer, i watch and, sometimes, worry.

i think i'm a textbook case of how the psa fucks with your head.

DMW. Diet and exercise is the only way. Cut, poison and burn is not. Get Suzanne Somers latest book "Bombshell" and learn how the times are a changin' about such things..

I was diagnosed with acute prostatitis at age 30 after a higher than normal PSA test. Doctor put me on 30 days worth of cipro which absolutely wreaked havoc on my body. 2 years later and I still suffer intermittent side effects of pelvic pain syndrome.

My PSA keeps coming back normal, samples came back negative. No one can figure out why I still have symptoms. Physiotherapist thinks it could be piriformis syndrome or pedundal nerve entrapment(sciatica) or both that just coincidentally started during my treatment for acute prostatitis. Saw another urologist who said he never even would've had my PSA checked because it's notoriously inaccurate.

I still think it all has to do with the fucking cipro though. I was feeling fine until I started taking it.

Long story short. I wish I hadn't gone to the doctor and just waited an extra couple of days instead.

thanx andy.

i'm good about exercise. less good about food.

suzanne somers could help me by wrapping her plush lips around my unit.

crotoa.

i recently turned 66. originally diagnosed at 64. watchful waiting is generally advised for those 65 and up, with a low- or intermediate-grade cancer. that's the path i'm on. since the biopsy came back positive, my psa went up a little, then down, then up a couple of months ago. doc has found nothing with the digital.

my old man died in his mid-80s with prostate cancer. a man could do worse that hit 85.

I just ran a PSA on myself today actually, simply to get a baseline number when I'm pretty sure I don't have any issues going on yet.

My father:
Diagnosed prostate cancer about 12 years ago
Had radiation treatment(s) followed by full removal over time
Took one or two courses of Lupron (the Test squasher med)
Recently got a PSA back of 142...that's not good, probably means metastasis
Apparently a final course of Lupron is the last option the docs are giving him.

No, I don't treat him. He's done some alternative stuff I've suggested, but he won't go the full route even while the conventional stuff is running out of options.

So...I figure a baseline PSA is a good idea, hopefully I never need to refer to it again.

Suzanne Somers is a stone cold awesome Fox at age 65. 11-12 years ago had a tit removed with cancer. They've grown her a brand new luscious tit back with stem cells recently. Bombshell is a bunch of interviews with doctors now in the anti-aging business. Very good stuff. Definitely worth the read. Believe me.

Croatia. Cipro is what they put me on. Lousy shit nearly caused me to croak. I didn't have cancer. It was prostatitis from too much caffeine and alcohol. My own immune system took care of it easily.

Andy, how long was your run of cipro and did you take the entire course of it?

Fucking nasty stuff though. Every joint in my body felt like stone and I was pissing out of my ass for a month afterwards.

It was about 3 months. On 10 bucks a pill. Long enough for the infection from the biopsy to spread through my midsection to a very dangerous level. I went back to my immune supporting supplement on my own and infection was gone in a week.

This is the face of desperation.

WTF organizations like ACAM and A4M and even dental conventions are having her in as the keynote speaker is beyond me.

Watch for her suicide in a couple years. Self-hate is a bitch.

Sounds like you know about such things. Look at these pics of her. https://www.google.com/search?q=suzanne ... 53&bih=540.

If you don't think she's hot, then obviously you're Y chromosome is seriously fucked up.

I hadn't really thought about it as a specific prevention regimen until now, not that I'm on one. Here's the stuff I'm already doing that is related.

1. Exercise, both strength training (currently doing Convict Conditioning progressions and soon bringing back some barbell lower-body exercises once my knee is cool again) and the very soon-to-be-implemented cardio circuit (similar to the one Tom described with a couple changes in modalities) at my office.
2. Selenium. I do about 300mcg a day from supplemental forms. I know I tend towards deficiency, because when I incorporated 200mcg 3x/day I was able to rid myself of a tinea versicolor skin issue that I've had for over 15 years (selenium-based shampoos are often used as a topical treatment that don't last because people stop using them when it goes away).
3. Cruciferous veggies. Brussels sprouts and broccoli are staples in my house, having both once a week at least. My next form of selenium (Jarrow Selenium Synergy) comes with a broccoli extract in it.
4. Manganese and zinc. I get both of these in my multi, which I take a half--recommended-dose of daily.
5. Marinating my meat whenever possible when I grill.
6. Don't get fat.
7. Don't smoke (my father was a moderate smoker for a good number of years, I got over my couple of cigarettes at the nightclub only phase in college).
8. Don't be a dentist like my dad with the exposure to potential carcinogens that he had.
9. Avoid exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and other -cides as much as possible. For example, not golfing regularly like my father. For a while, he had a rash on his lower calves that I do not doubt was from whatever they sprayed on the golf course. Even though we supposedly have a "green"/safe weed service available that my wife (unbeknownst to me) had spray our yard a little while ago, I have since forbid the practice further.
10. Reduce stress. My focus on getting a flotation REST tank (aka sensory deprivation) in my office to help with this--along with being a new low-work income stream--is bordering on a very mild obsession right now. I have not had a true vacation in 5 years and I've only taken one sick day. This has to change.
11. Vitamin D. Just had my levels tested. Getting "good" sun (I'm very fair-skinned and easily burnt) and whatever supplemental level I need.
12. At least one meatless meal per day, and trying to minimize non-grassfed beef. I do want to try to start getting wild salmon in at least once a week, I'm not doing well at this yet.

There was a lot of good info that made me think about these things in this PDF, so thanks for that Tom (that and the cardio circuit concept).

how about lycopene, duck?

a lot of prostate info talks about that--cooked tomatoes are the top source, as i recall.

are you still anti-nightshade?

I don't overconsume nightshades, but I have them occasionally now. With many of the things I've done health-practice-wise in the recent year or two, I'm much less sensitive to them now but I still think they have their issues (particularly capsaicin consumption in excess).

I'm not so sure about the lycopene thing either. It may be a red herring.
http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/content/95/21/1578.full
Conclusions: [IN RATS]Consumption of tomato powder but not lycopene inhibited prostate carcinogenesis, suggesting that tomato products contain compounds in addition to lycopene that modify prostate carcinogenesis. Diet restriction also reduced the risk of prostate cancer. Tomato phytochemicals and diet restriction may act by independent mechanisms.

After reading that fucking regimen you're on, sounds like you're pretty desperate yourself. Having thoughts of suicide yourself? That pic SS was no doubt taken after she had her right tit cut off. She refused the chemo and radiation and the doc told her she'd die. But she fought it for 11 years on exercise, supplements and good food. And now she has a new tit, happy, fucks a lot and looking forward to living maybe past 120.
