Goddammit. This book has science studies we've talked about

Post by seeahill »

On the training forum. And more. Clearly written, studies cited in the back. I reviewed it on the products page, but few saw it because it has a stupid title. The First 20 Minutes. It's worth your time. And I want to talk about it with knowledgable people. Also, IGers.

Pickle juice. It somehow cures cramps. Within minutes. There's no time from ingestion to cramp cure for the pickle juice to get into your system. No one knows how it works. Pickle juice, but some early tests suggest vinegar may work better. Many high level college track coaches are using pickle juice with their cramped athletes.

here's an interview with her on npr to give you a feel for her info. i found this noteworthy:

"A lot of people are trying barefoot running without preparation and without the knowledge of what happens when you take off your running shoes, and I was one [of them]. And what often happens is exactly what happened to me, which is that you almost immediately hurt your Achilles tendon."

- Highest rate of running injuries correlates with wearing motion control shoes. Best shoes are the least shoes (once conditioned to wear them)
- Exercise combats Alzheimer's
- Unfitness signs correlates with total couch potato time, no matter how much you work out (laying around is bad for you)
- People unconsciously adjust their total caloric output when they are dieting to keep from losing weight

Lots a great tidbits

Runners who do static stretches before a race will be slower than they would be if they didn't stretch.

Ok, I was gonna give nafod the win as Seehill's was plagiarized (shocker), and fatties first one was too simple. But "Blink" was funny so fattie ftw

It probably is the vinegar in the pickle juice. Apple cider vinegar works well for this. They claim its the potassium that gives ACV its benefits. I'm not sure I completely understand this because if you look at the amount of vinegar in a serving its not much compared to say orange juice or V8. My thinking is that it might be a more bioavailable form in the ACV. The pickle juice does work well.

I'll try to check this book out.

The use of pickle juice as a defense against muscle cramps first attracted headlines when the Philadelphia Eagles credited pickle juice with their cramp-free win over the Dallas Cowboys in the over-one-hundred-degrees Texas heat

Probably some combination of the sodium, mild acidity, and whatever electrolytes that are drawn into the juice from the cucumbers.

A Tbsp of blackstrap molasses and some salt mixed with something drinkable and slightly acidic (fresh lemon juice would be one option) would probably work very similarly. I did this at one of the Highland Games here where it was damn hot, had no problems...and I tend to get crampy at PL meets, so lasting through the 8 events in HG without getting crampy was a win in my book.

Just remembered, I did add a bit of ACV and honey to the mix too.
