which would make my argument even stronger, that someone like Hughes or GSP would have a better shot at being GOAT over Silva, who fought in the UFC equivalent of the kiddy pool

Sure Silva had more title defenses, but look at who he faced to get that record.

The same arguments are made for/against Fedor.

Who cares what Dana wants, He's a piece of shit. Silva's record is solid but no way is he greatest of all time. I'd be impressed if he did anyhitng other than showboat and preen, catch weight at 195 would be fine.

As for GOAT, Sakuraba has a lock on that. Why? Because he's the opposite of the GSP's and Silvas..Anywhere...Anytime.
Sakuraba was awesome. God I miss that guy

Word is Sonnen's camp is filing an appeal...

Possibly about the greasing, grabbing the shorts, the fence, the knee and the fence-hold while delivering the knee after Silva was warned.

This is a common boxing fallacy: If a champion dominates a division too easily, the division must be soft. If welterweight was such a shark tank division, surely some P4P contender would step up to take on the King of the Kiddy Pool at 185. Yet they don't, primarily because Parkinsons is a drag.

Sonnen is bitching about being defrauded? That's rich.

Another common fallacy is equating every win. "Silva has ten title defenses so he must be the best!" But at least half were against nobodies. Compare that to GSP or Hughes, who had to repeatedly fight several other men who all held the belt at one time or another. Same thing for LHW. Nobody could hold the belt for more than 1 fight b/c the competition was so stiff at the top.

....If a bigger man refuses a challenge from a smaller man, the natural response is that he is scared. Whether it's fair or not is not my problem. That's how it works.

Rich Franklin is a solid striker with over half his wins coming from TKO.
Dan Henderson is both a solid striker AND a freestyle wrestler, up until Sonnen he also had one of the better fights against Silva, so there is something to be said about his weakness.
Vitor has won 14/21 wins by TKO, why would you brush him off as "not a serious striking challenge"?

To say Silva has fought in the weakest division is full retarded. Heavyweight has been, and continues to be far and away the weakest division, I mean Jesus Tim Sylvia was the champ for a decent amount of time... You could maybe argue that middle weight is starting to have less talent/competition, but seriously look at WHY middleweight has less talent right now!! It is because fighters are leaving that weight class in droves to avoid Anderson Silva. Rich Franklin, Damien Mia, Dan Henderson (my fav fighter btw) are just a few of the guys who have left the weight class because they knew they had slim to nill chance at beating Silva.

Oh, and getting upset because he doesn't want to change weight class.... do you know how much work, and how hard that is? Especially knowing he would have to cut back down to defend his title? The guys you reference as fighting multiple weight classes never faced the level of competition in those weight classes that is seen in the UFC today and thus could get away with being under sized on talent alone (BJ Penn anyone?). On top of that they did not do it regularly, but fought in one class for a year or two, changed for a year or two, changed back. Very rarely would a fighter flip weights for a single fight.

Is Silva the Greatest pound for pound fighter ever? Who knows, there is no way to ever make a definitive assessment for that. But I think at the very least you have to admit the possibility and acknowledge that a decent argument could be made for it.

CharlieBob,

Dan Henderson was a Greco Roman wrestler, not a freestyle wrestler. Also, he didn't leave 185 because he thought he couldn't beat Anderson. In fact, stayed at 185 until the end of his 2nd UFC run culminating in his win against Bisping at 185 lbs, and he pushed for a rematch with Anderson the entire time. If anybody ran him back to 205, it was Jake Shields who beat him in his last 185 match which took place in Strikeforce. Since he came back to the UFC, he has said he doesn't want to cut that much weight anymore, BUT HE WILL cut to 185 again if he gets a rematch with Anderson. Surprised you didn't know all of that with him being your favorite fighter and all.

Also, Silva walks around at 220 and was not fat or out of shape whatsoever for the Griffin fight. In fact, he looked bigger than Griffin, who is known as a HUGE light heavyweight who cuts from 240-250. You said "very rarely would a fighter flip weights for a single fight". Well, it just so happens the fighter we are talking about, Anderson Silva, has done just that twice in the last few years! LOL!

If Floyd Mayweather finally legitimately wanted to fight Pacquiao, would you be fine with Pac ducking the fight because, even though he has fought and won at PBFs weight(as has Anderson at Jones' weight), he could easily make a weight class 15-20 pounds lower? Of course not, unless you're a fan of his that doesn't want to see him lose.

This thread has cemented one thing in my mind, now Dan Henderson along with Sakuraba deserve the title of all times greats.

The cute little irony is that Silva has done nothing in the fights I've seen to cement his place among the greats with the exception of coming off his back to beat Sonnen twice.

Fact: there is no one fighter out there who has so dominated a division for so long as Silva. And this is 2012 - it's a big money sport. If you think Silva isn't truly great, watch his fight with Franklin - a former champion totally humiliated and out-classed. No glimmer of hope. Just a stark gulf in class at everything. Silva is a very special fighter and apart from maybe Royce Gracie, is most people's pick for GOAT. Unique talent, a privilege to watch and one dangerous MOFO. Anyone arguing with that is a cuntoid.

Now, see...you had to go and fuck it all up. The trolling was pretty believable up until that line, and we could kind of suspend belief for a moment and pretend that we had a very special idiot on our hands and feel really good about ourselves as we insulted you and put you in your rightful place. But no, you had to push the edge of the envelope as far as you could, and stepped right over into "LULZ HE'S OBVIOUSLY TROLLING" mode and ruin it for all us. I hope you're proud of yourself.

Gracie practically invented the sport. He is "great" because he blazed a trail. "Cage-fighting" was mostly illegal when he started. He went with multiple fights in one night with practically zero rules and no weight classes. The image of him in his gi, hands aloft, is and will be THE defining image of MMA for evermore.

You should be more thankful and respectful of solid achievement, you prick.

Rant writes better and more interesting shit than most still here. That you draw comparisons (and so frequently) is high praise indeed. Thank you.

Seriously though, constantly referring to "meds" and references to suicide are in really poor taste. Even anonymously on the internet. You should try to grow a little.

And sorry for making fun of your digestive problems. Gooey shit is a terrible cross to bear.

I agree. Henderson has a resume that is impressive as hell, and he's got all the tools and has demonstrated them all at one time or another, in addition to fighting whenever, whoever, and at whatever weight class. He is the only guy (?) to hold belts in two separate divisions at once I think?

Didn't he give fedor a hard time in fedor's prime as well?

I know he beat him recently. But I'm talking years ago when fedor was a force. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought they fought in Pride.
