Re: WAAAAAAAAR SONNEN
Hendo got stopped by a smaller Anderson Silva. Pretty hard to be GOAT when you have unavenged losses to the other candidates. Y'all are on crack.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Easier to just not challenge them and call yourself the GOAT.Grandpa's Spells wrote: Pretty hard to be GOAT when you have unavenged losses to the other candidates.

Also, I noticed that Hendo is stepping up to take a swing at Jon Jones here shortly. Even though he's 40+ and giving up 13" of reach to a 24 year old with a 16-1 record, he's taking a stab. Says a lot. He's still going for the big wins.

Reading Hendo's wiki and you have quite an impressive array of wins and matches.protobuilder wrote:Also, I noticed that Hendo is stepping up to take a swing at Jon Jones here shortly. Win some, lose some but he fought anyone he could.

Hendo is many times the fighter Silva is for the very reasons Proto is harping on. Silva has a nice legacy, but if you can't even grasp that greateness is not imited to the number of cans in your W column we cannot help you. Perhaps you woudl enjoy baseball statistics?
I think GOAT is a waste of time to argue becuase of intangibles...but based on his preening showboating and alternativley floppy lazy performces, Silva doesn't belong in the same room as many others who have held the belt.

Proto went into satire mode a little while ago, so you're agreeing with somebody who isn't even making serious arguments any more.Blaidd Drwg wrote:Hendo is many times the fighter Silva is for the very reasons Proto is harping on.
You seem to be equating gameness with greatness. Seems reasonable if you're comparing two otherwise equal fighters if they never fought for some reason.Silva has a nice legacy, but if you can't even grasp that greateness is not imited to the number of cans in your W column we cannot help you. But Hendo can not both be many times the fighter Silva is and also get stopped by the smaller Silva. This isn't comparing fighters of different eras. They actually fought each other and the big guy got stopped by the little guy.
And yet... here you are.I think GOAT is a waste of time to argue becuase of intangibles...

Re: WAAAAAAAAR SONNEN
I will ignore the vicious ad hominems of GS's argument (?), only to point out that Hendo is not a larger man than Silva. The fight was at 185, which both men made. Silva is taller than Hendo and has a reach advantage and walks around well above 200 as does Hendo. No size advantage for Hendo in that fight.

It's also less than two decades old with ten good years of a good rule set and legitimate purses. We have not yet seen what purebred MMA fighters can do. Nor have we witnessed the unmitigated Tapout/Affliction fanboy faggotry that will go with it.Blaidd Drwg wrote:I think GOAT is a waste of time to argue becuase of intangibles...but based on his preening showboating and alternativley floppy lazy performces, Silva doesn't belong in the same room as many others who have held the belt.
Re: WAAAAAAAAR SONNEN
Been a while since I've seen stat-nerd as ad hom of choice.
I think GOAT arguments are ridiculous in a sport this young, which differs so wildly from its origins. If I had to wager on one fighter of this generation of the sport claiming greatest of era, I'll put money on JBJ. The first "purebred MMA" superstar and given his talents and physical gifts (and more weight/move to HW down the line), seems he'll be in the top rung of fighters for a very long time.
Leaving out the GOAT argument - Silva is great, regardless of what he chooses to do as far as weight class. If he can maintain his run despite "preening showboating" and "floppy laziness," that only speaks to his skill level, no?

He can maintain his run as long the division is soft and Dana protects him.

Re: WAAAAAAAAR SONNEN
I've not seen any evidence that White protects anyone. Silva losing his belt controversially would set up the biggest PPV in UFC history.
If the UFC were out to protect anyone it would be freakishly marketable Americans like Jones and Cain.

I think Dana absolultey protects people until he gets tired of them. Then all bets are off.

Also, I have a mancrush on Henderson...awesome fighter, awesome dude, I dig his approach to the game.
And this doesn't hurt:

Re: WAAAAAAAAR SONNEN
Bats and I have talked about this in the past; Hendo is a boss. He has a beautiful horse ranch up near Temecula, a fine family, and has made MMA pay him for all his blood, sweat, and tears. That's an incredibly rare thing, and I hope he gets out in once piece to enjoy a life of coaching and watching his family grow. I don't know about GOAT, but Dan Henderson runs shit.

I'm glad Jon Jones came out and acknowledged what I've been saying:
I can see myself losing interest in UFC as it turns more and more into a corporate mainstream sport.
And there you go. Too much money at risk. Why risk losing Burger King's sponsorship jsut to prove you are the greatest fighter in the world, amirite? It's not that he won't fight me or I won't fight him. To be dead honest, it's that we both have a lot to lose and we both respect each other a lot and we both are striving for personal greatness. . . . We're in completely different weight classes. We both have sponsor deals and things that are really important to us and a big part of that sponsorship package is being a winning-being a champion. Having us fight each other means one of our championships goes away.

So far, sponsorships are where the money is. Things might change if the purses increase.UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who topped the 11-fight bill last Saturday at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, banked a flat $200,000 with no win bonus for his 10th consecutive title defense, a second-round stoppage of Chael Sonnen ($50,000).

Re: WAAAAAAAAR SONNEN
I would bet my left nut that Sonnen and Silva made a shit load more than their stated pay. Backroom bonuses and all.

Silva, and a few other stars, gets a percentage of PPV revenue. It was estimated he made $5-7 million on UFC 148, before any sponsorshipsjohno wrote:protobuilder wrote:Too much money at risk. What kind of a purse are they attributing to Sonnen?

$50,000.
Note: The disclosed purses reported by state athletic commissions do not include any performance-based or discretionary bonuses that may be awarded to a fighter by the promotion. Additionally, the reported figures do not reflect any deductions made by the commission for taxes, insurance, etc., and do not include any sponsorship money that a fighter may acquire for their performance.
