There are some hard core kettlekooks there. Beautiful city though.

Re: Houston
I'd put some serious consideration into that decision. I spent six years down there and it was scarring.
1. The heat. I'm not fucking kidding, it's the hottest metro area in the country. We used to vacation at my parents in South Florida and it was a relief from the heat, seriously. And I'm talking from May until you're putting up Christmas lights and sweating after Thanksgiving.
2. The geography. It's flatter than Kansas, and the beach pretty much sucks. The nearest interesting outdoors stuff is Hill Country 3 hours away. That said, if you live north of Houston, it is at least somewhat forested.
3. Hurricanes. Hurricanes are prevalent in a lot of the country, but the Houston area had 4 million people evacuating toward mainly two sides of the compass. Rita and Ike sucked cock. Oh, BTW, plan on somewhere around $2500/year in mandatory windstorm insurance. Again, living North of the city or West mitigates this.
4. The cost of living. Housing, gas, and groceries are cheap as shit, especially housing. This is a consideration because it makes it very difficult to leave Houston, once you are fed up with 1., 2., and 3. As an interesting side note, the cheap brick housing and other services are mainly due to immigrant labor but you'll have a street full of Texas Christian conservatives that rail against illegal immigration.
I'd go with Austin, or even Dallas any day of the week.

Oh, and you get to deal with this:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ans ... _blog.htmlTexas GOP wrote:Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.

Re: Houston
My 2 cents worth based on the limited amount of time I've spent there: big urban sprawl, traffic can be nasty, but if you live/work in the right area it probably isn't too bad.

http://www.weather.com/news/NFL-Preseas ... ?pageno=11Top 10 Worst Weather NFL Training Camps
1) Houston Texans – Houston, Texas
Linebacker Greg Williams #49 of the Houston Texans cools off during OTA's on May 24, 2012 in Houston, Texas.
The quote New Yorkers apply to themselves “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere” is valid to the willing participants at the Texans NFL camp.
The combination of hot daily temperatures and oppressive dew points allows the Texans camp to be dubbed “NFL's Iron Man camp.”
The dew point measures how comfortable one feels due to the amount of moisture in the air. Typically, dew points in the mid 60s are considered muggy and the lower to mid 70s oppressive. Higher dew points do not allow for much evaporation of perspiration from the skin.
The wind direction is generally from the Gulf of Mexico 40 percent of the time in July and August, keeping the high humidity spigot on in Houston. On the bright side, the average high drops to 92 degrees by the time camp breaks (Okay, I am a bit sarcastic).
July/August average high: 93 degrees / 93.5 degrees
July/August % of hours above 85 degrees: 36% / 36%
July/August average dew point: 74.5 degrees / 74 degrees
July/August % of hours with overcast sky: 5% / 4%

Re: Houston
You'll only be 6 hours from us, that should make your decision right there.
It's hot, but you get used to it after a summer. You don't have to shovel heat. I don't have humidity here (not mid west humidity at least) but you're already used to that.

And I'm up here too! I will get a tandem bicycle with a basket on it and we will go for long rides and stop for a picnic! Think of how cool that will be.
