He was performing an experiment, whereby he would take different drugs every day and do a new self-portrait while under the influence. Some of these are actually pretty cool.
He did this one on a cocktail of Abilify Ativan and Xanax:

I've heard that, too. Apparently if you have ADD, something about your brain chemistry is a little different, allowing for stimulants like Ritalin or Cocaine to slow you down, so-to-speak. Weird...

One explanation I've heard is that they stimulate the filter that allows you to focus on one of the deluge of thoughts flooding your head.
My guess is that this guy either took a relatively higher dose of cocaine, or cocaine stimulates different things. There are certainly differences between the effects of caffeine and stimulants used for ADHD.

Adderall is a mix of amphetamine salts. The clinical pharmacology is different between cocaine and amphetamines, for sure (other than the fact they are all "stimulants").
I wonder how many parents would give their kids amphetamines if they actually knew that was what was in it. I've known some parents to simply medicate their children's hyperactivity with caffeine for a similar effect (they said). When I was a kid, I could drink a Coke and go right to sleep...stimulants can have paradoxical effects in kids for reasons yet unknown (or at least I'm not familiar with them).
This is interesting stuff! For me, if I drink more than my regular one cup of coffee in the morning, I get the shakes, heart palpitations, and I can't concentrate on anything. I'm useless for several hours. It's always been that way. And I always feared drugs like coke or meth because I figured if I ever did them, it'd be like having way too much coffe, only 100 X's WORSE.
Conversely, I smoked a ton of weed in college and shortly after. I could roll up a Dutch with schwag, take two hits and be glue to the fucking couch for two hours. And it was a nice mental and physical break. Never got "high" with weed, always got straight STONED.

I have no doubt that many parents would react irrationally to the word "amphetamine".

I find caffeine to be much less effective for mental focus than amphetamines or Ritalin, and the effect it does have on concentration seems to wear off faster than any other effect. But it's still better than nothing.

I think many of us with an ADD brain use stims to self medicate.
