http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball ... 57076430/1Victor Conte says Melky Cabrera far from alone
BALCO founder Victor Conte is convinced half of Major League Baseball players are still using illegal drugs.
Victor Conte, former founder of the infamous BALCO, simply laughed on the telephone. He knew San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was cheating. Conte knows plenty of other star baseball players are cheating, too.
When pressed to make an educated guess on just how many Major League Baseball players today are still taking illegal performance-enhancing drugs, and circumventing the system, Conte paused, then finally spit out a percentage that should make every baseball fan spit up over a toilet. "I would say," Conte said, speaking slowly, "maybe as much as half of baseball."
. . .
"There is no way that Victor Conte would have information that would allow him to have any basis on that," MLB vice president Rob Manfred told USA TODAY Sports. "He's just making that up. It's a guess. We use the very best, most sophisticated methodologies that are available.''
Still, Conte says, they're not nearly good enough to catch the cheaters. "To circumvent the test is like taking candy from a baby. It's so easy to circumvent. I call it the 'duck-and-dodge' system. The only people that get caught are the dumb, and the dumber."

damned if i know about legal or illegal.
their use is against the rules if you are a baseball player, i.e. "illegal."
and there's this (is it inaccurate?):
i was charmed by conte's statement that most guys still use and mlb is clueless.

http://www.criminalattorney.com/crimes/ ... teroid.htmANABOLIC STEROID CHARGES
Federal and most state laws dictate that the sales of anabolic steroids, possession of steroids, or possession of steroids with intent to sell, are all classified as felonies. Any individual who is convicted of the sale of steroids, or possesses steroids unlawfully with intent to sell, may be penalized by up to five years in prison under federal law. That same individual may face more than 5 years of punishment, depending on their states law. Almost every state has sanctioned various laws placing anabolic steroids in the Controlled Substance category.
Recent statistics estimate as many as 6 million Americans have used or currently do use steroids. While the vast majority of users do not get caught, the penalties are steep for ones that do. The legal consequences of possession of anabolic steroids may be a felony criminal charge in state or federal court. The enactment of the Federal Anabolic Steroid Control Acts of 1990, which was expanded by Congress in 2004, places steroids in the Schedule III legal class, along with barbiturates, LSD precursors, veterinary tranquilizers, and narcotic painkillers. This would make simple unlawful possession a federal offence, punishable by up to one year in prison and/or a minimum fine of $1,000 for a first offense.

the snippet is wrong, they are scheduled drugs with specific and legit medical uses. manufacture, distribution and possession without specific license is prohibited by law.

I think MLB is about as "clueless" as the UCI....as in they know exactly what's going on. Very selective and non-disruptive "enforcement" is what is called for on their part and anything more is suicidal. It is in no one's interest except shitbirds like Hatch and Biden for baseball or any other sport to be "clean".

so if the feds were to sweep in and lock his ass up, then guys might take notice.
your point about mlb knowing what's going on makes some sense. when there was the big brouhaha about steroids--bonds, sosa, etc--you didn't hear a peep out of owners. they were happy to have juicers setting long-ball records and pack the stands.
and in all the recriminations, the press never went after owners for their complicity.
dept of justice should got after the owners with a rico prosecution--conspiracy to encourage illegal use of controlled substances to significantly increase revenues. that would be some kind of fun. but i'm not holding my breath.

wrong answer.
everyone should grow the fuck up and leave it out of the Government's hands. The drug war is an epic fail in every respect. if MLB wants to make it against the rules, that's a civil matter between grown ups and 5 times the compliance could be achieved with very very little effort.

I don't know about increased compliance in this case. He's had a rocky career, and is on a one year contract-- he was likely looking for a big long term contract.Blaidd Drwg wrote:wrong answer.

If the league wanted to net 80% of the cheaters they could. Whether Melky is a genius at getting away with it I can't speak to.

You may be right, I really don't know. I do know they have a hard time sanctioning the players they do catch.Blaidd Drwg wrote:If the league wanted to net 80% of the cheaters they could. Whether Melky is a genius at getting away with it I can't speak to.

I rate my feelings very highly, perhaps not high enough.

Felix Hernandez pitched the Seattle Mariners' first perfect game and the 23rd in baseball history, overpowering the Tampa Bay Rays in a brilliant 1-0 victory on Wednesday.

I generally assume all pro athletes are on something, and don't really care. But it was pointed out to me about a year ago that there hasn't been a 50home run season since MLB started cracking down, so for now I'm assuming that baseball is relatively "clean", no matter what Victor Conte says.

I can understand big-time athletes using PEDs because there are millions of $ at stake, even though I respect guys like BJ Penn -- who would rather be pudgy and lose with honor -- much more than lying juiceheads who hide the fact that they're chugging down a chem lab for breakfast every morning.
What I don't understand is any of the guys on this forum taking this crap. I can most assuredly say that none of you are elite athletes or anywhere close. At least not on a professional level where your livelihoods depend on your athletic performance. There is absolutely NO REASON for you to take PEDs other than pure vanity. Most of you are fat anyway, so it's purely to lift big numbers and make it into a cock-measuring contest. Some serious insecurity going around here.

That's not just entertaining, it's Cruel...all Seattle athletes deserve a get out of Seattle contract free card when they reach that talent level. He's wasted on this town.
