Tech folks: dual monitors

Post by Grandpa's Spells »

I'm putting together a setup for dual monitors and came across an issue I'm hoping somebody's familiar with.

Most video cards now come with VGA and DVI ports for use as dual monitors. My monitors are both VGA only. I'm told that there are limitations on going from digital (DVI) to analog (VGA) and vice-versa, but I'm not sure of the directing and don't want to have to buy/return/rebuy shit.

If the video card has a DVI port, can I get a VGA to DVI adapater, connect that to the VGA cable coming out of the back of the monitor, and connect it to the PC? I am hearing mixed answers.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

This is what you need

I use a DVI to VGA adapter on a home computer. Works fine.

Google your video card's manufacturer, they should recommend something, it's a common question. Call, email or text their help line as required.

Edit: Nice "no hotlinking" graphic.

Nafod, is this what you use?

Note the M/F types. These could be reversed.

Yup, something like that. I pinged the video card folks before buying it. Been a while.

Dual monitors are nice.
