Baffled,
Well, I'm baffled myself. I didn't know my name was copywrited (and won't the soccer player be pissed). And I don't know what seo is. And I don't sue. I might send my attorney, Darth Vicious, but I don't sue.

Tell me what you're talking about and maybe I can figure it out.

I leave for this one Oct. 11. I'm feeling in shape. over 900 miles walked this year. Weight down to @200 lbs, which is light for me. I've been doing Mt. Livingston, right near by. 6000 ft to 9400. It's a walk up, but the last half mile is 1000 feet. It's a scramble. some guys wear gloves and do it on all fours. I do it w/ my poles and don't have to rest. Means I'm in good shape, in my mind.

As for what happens when I'm at 18,800 --- our highest pt --- I don't know. Been to 15,000 w/ only a minor headache. We'll see. they say folks over 50 aren't as prone to altitude sickness.

I've talked to people who've done it. Some buff guys have said it's hard. People have turned back. Others, people I didn't perceive as being hard core, did it with no problem. Who knows.

At this point, I'm ready. Frankly, I think it'll be a piece of cake. I might even be pissed I worked so hard on it.

I didn't see this thread when it was posted.

The walk to base camp is something that I would like to do. I have talked to a few people who have done it and the older folks who hike and walk a lot seem to do fine.

I remember reading "Into Thin Air" for the first time and thinking how cool it would be to be able to BS my way into trips like that just because I could write about them later.
I taught the case study that used this book and read everything related that I could fine for months. Remember being jealous of the author as well.

It'll be a blast.

But you must harden your heart! If you see someone dying / calling out for help, remember that your mission cannot be compromised. Step over and around them. No point losing time. Probably not much that could be done for them anyway. You're no doctor. Keep moving forward. They knew the risks. Fuck 'em. It'll give a nice frisson to your anecdote when you're back. God speed!
It's great to be first at last

Just remember that coca/cocaine helps with altitude sickness.

The wife and I have it on our to do list within the next couple years - of course I'm much younger at only 64 right now. Seriously Good Luck to you - I think you'll be fine. I would have loved to have read your training log as you built up for this.

Climber,
You can read my log at

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=210800&start=75

Start on page 4 for this year.

Basically, it is a weekly account of miles walked and elevation gained. Kinda boring.

To sum up: since the first of the year, and as of today, I've walked 896 miles in training. (None of that pedometer counting steps shopping, these were all training walks, mostly on trails.)

I've accumulated 43,979 feet of elevation gain.

I've lost about 22 pounds.

Not encouraging. I fly to Lukla Oct. 16.

KATMANDU, Nepal — A small plane carrying 19 people to the Mount Everest region crashed soon after takeoff here on Friday after striking a bird, killing everyone onboard, officials said.

Seven British, five Chinese and four Nepalese passengers were reported to have been killed, as were three crew members. The plane, which was headed to Lukla, a gateway to Mount Everest, was a propeller-driven Dornier owned by Sita Air, a domestic carrier.

It was the seventh fatal plane crash in Nepal since August 2010, according to the Aviation Safety Network, a research organization. Nepal is a popular trekking destination, and a number of its small airports are tucked between mountains and often shrouded in fog.

Do you know why airplanes don't fly through clouds in Nepal. The clouds have rocks in them.
