I had just been promoted to senior PA at my job. I was the youngest one.

Freshman Year in College. Guy down the hall bought the CD. Listened to it drinking Milwaukee's Best and sitting in his room trying to figure out how to score beer.

I never bought any Nirvana. I listened to 5th Ward gangster rap, Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, and Ice T until I made the jump to classic rock then to White Zombie and Tool.

The current lineup of AIC is fairly good and sounds surprisingly similar to when Lane Staley was alive.tough old man wrote:I liked Soundgarden.
But I miss Alice in Chains

I always hated Smashing Pumpkins. In the mid to late 90s I had a shaved head and face at the same time and people started telling me I looked like Billy Corgan. That shit always pissed me off.syaigh wrote:I could never stand Smashing Pumpkins. Next time you listen to one of their songs, picture the lead singer sitting on the toilet with severe constipation. You probably won't like them anymore either.
Someone even asked me for my autograph once.

Having Alice in Chains, Mad Season, the Melvins, Mother Love Bone, Screaming Trees, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney all come out of a single city in less than a decade moves Seattle to the top of the class. In fact, we need to have the city host the 2012 Summer Games to shame the musical display that London put on. Of course, the only problems are that Rio already has the games, most of the performers are dead. Oh, and Seattle has no professional teams or facilities.
I don't know if there has ever been a period for music like that - I have Nevermind in my Top 10 or 20 all-time albums but would have no problem if somebody didn't think that it was one of the Top 10 albums of the year even. However, perhaps we are officially old and in another few decades people will be discussing how 2012 was the year that Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj AND Jason Mraz all had new albums come out.

Portland-- at both La Luna and the Crystal Ballroom I think. It seemed like they were there three or four times a year, like you said.Blaidd Drwg wrote:Turdacious wrote:Yes. They are great live, saw them many times.Blaidd Drwg wrote: Fugazi, Steady Diet of Nothing
In Portland, Seattle or DC?
Seems like they were on heavy rotation between those three for about 10 years.

You fucking Dick, it's getting harder to hate you!LOL! Old Soungarden was the SHIT as was Mudhoney and Green River. Remeber the line " Mamma Mamma Mommy look at your son. Got himself a good job, killing niggers and mexicans!"Blaidd Drwg wrote:Saw Nirvana play at the Evergreen dorms...thought they sucked..three years later I'm framing houses in Seattle and the laborers are playing it all day. No Mudhoney but they'll do.
Better bands by far.
Hell....even Tad was better.
I was 18 or 19 when Nevermind came out and I liked it alot but with in a year I got so sick of hearing it and people gushing over it more than Soundgarden, who were my favorite band at the time.
I remeber doing metal framing in Florida when on the local Alternative station WKPX 88.5 ( A High school station that played awesome shit and started outdoing the local big rock stations like WSHE) that " We have word that a big singer from Seattle has killed himself, more details after this break." and they left it hanging. I remeber thinking "Fuck I hope it's not Chris Cornell, Vedder (Should have been), Mark Arm , Lyne Staley or Tad!" and then they came on and said it was Cobain " Eh not such a great loss there."

Fugazi, Steady Diet of Nothing
Mudhoney, EGBDF
Primal Scream's Screamadelica
Cypress Hill's self-titled debut
lowlites...Hole and U2 put out critically acclaimed shite
all of them trying to outshine the bright spots of 1990
Love Bone was great but Pantera were a bunch of faggot ass fakes. Yes they were tight and put on a good live show but the fact remains when Thrash was at it's before commercial breakout peak, Pantera were a fucking GLAM BAND! Eveb had Motley Crueish picks of Phil dong the posser lip pout shit. It was Diamond Darryl and Rex Rocker in them days. And then Mettalica showed there was real money and thrash and they became a thrash band. Fuck fakes!
I was in a band with a guy who grew up with Bert from Fear Factory, we were chilling with him at the 1st Ozzfest, rolling a joint on the lawn and watching people tear the sod up and throw it in the air, looked like tornados. Bert goes "Man I'm glad we dont have to go on after them." and I said yeah, the kids are inthralled but at least you guys aren't fucking fakes."
He said "True and they are a bunch of cokehead assholes."

I was an active, gigging muscian back then and it was great. After being hated by everyone not in the underground scenes in the late 80s and everything on MTV but 5 to 10 minutes of Headbangers Ball and half of 120 Minutes being total pop or glam shit it was kind of neat to see the kind of music I played on top all of the sudden and young girls wanting to suck my guitar playing dick.
I used to say " Man we are living in our own late 60s early 70s!" because I allways saw it like that as that to me at the time was what I considered Rocks golden age and here we were getting our own.
And I remember when I knew it was about to end. A bunch of us were over at my house and Stone Temple Pilots came on MYV and I said " It's over boys back to the underground for all of us." everyone said "What the fuck do you mean Father?" ( My band nickname).
" Shit boys, that is an obvious corperate rock band. A little Pearl Jam, a little Alice in Chains, a little Soundgarden and it's not by influence it's by design."
I soon read that they were once a glam band called Mighty Joe Young and was even more sure of my assesment.
Soon Smashing Pumpkins sounded real pussy (I was an early fan from the Gish days).
What a time though. And props for mentioning Mad Season. I said when I heard that record "McCready and Staley should leave their bands and do this because this has fucking heart.
Great shit from that time (1990-94)
Soundgarden:Badmotorfinger- Mind Blowing!
Pixies: Bossa Nova- Fucking awesome marriage between loud rock and atmosphere.
Primus: Frizzle Fry and Sailing the Seas of Cheese- TWEAK withoput needing to do any!
Alice in Chains: Facelift (What was good about L.Aish metal but with that North Western depression and sickness.
Tad: 8 Way Santa
Reverend Horton Heat: Liquer in the Front- Pschobilly at it's best.
The Black Crowes: Southern Harmony and Musical Companion - Turn off the lights hit the bong and chill.
Gruntruck: Gruntruck
The Last Crack: The Last Crack- A big influence on my playing at the time.
Beatie Boys: Ill Communication
Danzig 2 and 3
Green River; Green River
Barkmarket: L Ron
Blind Mellon: Blind Mellon - That fucking stupid Bee girl video and throw away song painted them in a bad light because that album was fucking awesome. You hear it after Hoon ODed and you tjhink "Yeah should have seen it coming." Bottlecap is powerfull in the same way as Neil Young's The Needle and the Damage Done. Hard drugs are fucked and bring only waste, loss and pain. "Well I'm glad that it's now instead of sooner!"
Live: Mental Jewlery
Temple of The Dog- Made me feel the way I did as a little kid when my uncle would let me hang out and listen to old Bad Company records in the late 70s. I used to jam to "Reach Down" all the time. McCready was a bad mother fucker.
Pearl Jam: 10, Vs and Vitology
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Majic
COC: Blind and Deleverence
Paul Weller, Wild Wood.- When I was going thorugh a creative and listening slump, bored with everything and out of my band and sick of the kind of music I played. I saw the video for "Sunflower" on 120 minutes and was floored! This was a big shift for me amd when I started looking into what was going on in the UK more.

Boy, all that hate's gonna burn you up.
I don't discriminate against glam....Hell,I even think a lot of hair bands were fucking great. One can like a great many things, preferably not Nirvana or the fugging Beatles...It doesn't make diminish the Misfits to like DK...just horses for courses.
Let's face the reality, most bands got better once they sold out enough to get studio time. Except...Temple of the Dog? Dude.. that's terrible, just terrible.
You'd probably hate him but of all those guys in that era that were ubiquitous at parties in Seattle, I've been lucky to meet Chris Cornell several times once we were both older and he's really down to earth and a good dad.

No man I still have alot of respect and admiration for Cornell, Thayell, Sheaperd and Cammeron. They were my favorite band in the early 90s and his first solo album was great. I saw him live on that tour with essentially Eleven backing him up. Incredible show. He was fuck spot on with his voce that night. Let's see I have seen Soundgarden 3 times. 90 with GnR ( I only went to see Soundgarden as I hate Asshole Rose), Lollapalooza 92 (AWESOME!) and 95 (Eh, Horton Heat kicked their ass sadly) and I saw him in DC for his first solo tour and I saw him in Vegas when he was playing with Temberland (Interesting).
He said something in an interveiw once that influenced my outlook when hitting the stage. Basically he said his favorite gig was one where the audenece hated them, he fed off their hate and played his ass off. He said " I either want them to love us or hate us, no in between shit. Leave it all on stage" I said that exact same thing the first time Furious Spring (my band) ever played a club. I always did leave it all on stage and was carried off twice after collpasing after the last note. All my love, hate, my past, my present, every good thing, every bad thing, every hurt and kindness, accomplishment and failure in my life seemed to channel through me and into my guitar when I did my job right.
Another thing struck me he said about how "As much as you should and do appriciate your fans and people telling you how great you are, sometimes you just want to be left the fuck along after a show." I thought at the time that was a bit dickish. Your fans put you where you are man.
Then I had a show one night where we were my personal life was in the shit but we were really fucking on and afterwards people kept coming up and grabbing on us and telling us how fucking good we were. I just wanted to be left alone. I remember thinking "Every fucked up thing with my parent's was up there. My broken engagement, her betrayel and the child of mine she aborted were up on that stage for all of them to see. What the fuck do they want from me now?" I found my best friend saked him to get me the fuck out of there and we went off and got drunk untill I passed out. I got what Cornell was getting at and I was just in a local original band that never played for more than 300 people so I can just imagine what it was like for him to have gone through that in front of thousands.
Just cant give it up for the glam though. Mother Love Bone is as close to that as I ever got. Andrew Wood was another who opened his soul for you. The man ODed right when he made it. Fucking sad but I understand it. Same with Hoon and Nowell.

Tesla was never a glam band though. Modern Day Cowboy and Edison's Medicine were great tunes.
Steel Panther is pretty funny.

first and last Alice in Chains show for me was this one.
My future wife was on acid at this show. I think I was dangerously sober.
