The History of DDT

Post by Turdacious »

In the last days of September 1943, as the U.S. Army advanced to the rescue of Italian partisans — some as young as nine — battling the Germans in the streets of Naples, the enraged Nazis, in a criminal act of revenge against their erstwhile allies, deployed sappers to systematically destroy the city’s aqueducts, reservoirs, and sewer system. This done, the supermen, pausing only to burn irreplaceable libraries, including hundreds of thousands of volumes and artifacts at the University of Naples — where Thomas Aquinas once taught — showed their youthful Neapolitan opponents their backs, and on October 1, to the delirious cheers of the Naples populace, Allied forces entered the town in triumph.

But a city of over a million people had been left without sanitation, and within weeks, as the Germans had intended, epidemics broke out. By November, thousands of Neapolitans were infected with typhus, with one in four of those contracting it dying of the lice-transmitted disease.[3] The dead were so numerous that, as in the dark time of the Black Death, bodies were put out into the street by the hundreds to be hauled away by carts. Alarmed, General Eisenhower contacted Washington and made a desperate plea for help to contain the disaster.

Fortunately, the brass had a new secret weapon ready just in time to deal with the emergency. It was called DDT,[4] a pesticide of unprecedented effectiveness.

The main use of DDT in America was to stop the spread of Polio, which at the time was whipping ass.

Exactly.

Surprisingly, I know a few my ownself. My MIL had polio, but she contracted it in 1943. Just like now, there were parents in the early 50's (when the polio vaccine came out) who refused to get their children vaccinated.

When I was a kid, iron lungs were too common.

Never heard that before. Polio spread by insects? Or was it supposed to kill the virus in fecal matter that was floating around in the water and lying around in the soil?

I remember now. It was used to kill flies back in the 40s because flies walked around in and ate the shit that contained the polio virus. Then walked around on our food. Used mainly to kill malaria carrying mosquitoes successfully
Here's a vid spraying DDT to combat spread of polio in Texas. Unsuccessful use.

It was mainly used to kill the breeding grounds of mosquitoes.

Infantile paralysis was no joke. After WWII was the start of the baby boom. Before Jonas Salk got busy, the only choice was to control the spread. It was a perfect storm.

The eradication of polio in the United States was one of the few times our government identified a problem and actually solved it.

I uderstand that. During the epidemic, before the exact cause was known, no stone was left unturned.

Did you look at that vid I posted about the DDT they sprayed in San Antonio to stop polio? Glad I wasn't there to breath in those clouds.

When my BIL was a kid his dad was stationed in the Phillipines. He said they use to run behind the spray trucks and play in the fog.

I did that regularly as a kid in upstate NY and so did my friends. Only negative effect was a stunted dick.

Back in the 40s a black hooker from Saratoga who had done a survey of a very large sample of dicks in upstate NY told me that she supported the observation of stunted dicks in that area. But she didn't know the cause because there wasn't time yet for a longitudinal study.
