Collective good doesn't mean much if you're the one who gets screwed.
Never talk to the cops.
This kid though.... I'm anti-death penalty for the same reasons I don't believe people should speak to the police, but shit. He makes me question my views on these matters.

True. But I have said things to cops innocently that cost me hours of court time to prove no involvement. There are times when talking to cops - even if you think they're looking incorrectly at something - is the right thing to do.

Gorbs...In the most Jeffersonian fashion I can muster...I respect your right to be wrong.
All I know about the UK legal system I learned from the BBC which is to say..I know nothing so I can only speak from the US system. I understand there could be a moral choice between assisting an investigation and covering your ass. Those of us in the US that have had the pleasure of dealing with Officer Friendly (even the law abiding real Merikan types) will nearly universally agree, err on the side of saying less, (far far far less ) than might occur to you. American law enforcement across the board and with very few exceptions is distrustful of the population they are sworn to serve. As rallying cry, it makes far more sense to advocate caution and silence. Get Ye a Solicitor first.

Say one of my kids goes missing. And someone is questioned. And says nothing. And then becomes a suspect. And the chief suspect. And they choose not to clear up a misunderstanding or clarify something. And it turns out they were standing on their rights while the police could have spent their time looking for the kid and the kidnapper but wasted it trying to eliminate that individual. I honestly think I'd want to smash his fucking head in and would likely try.

After an investigation and his day in court with representation and if found guilty you and Baff can keep pondering this heavy shit as the rest of us drag the fucker out back. I'm an American, we love dueprocess.

By the way, the point in the video where the cop starts to talk is at ~27 minutes.

Untill you take over and get us a better system, thats what you do except the kill the little fucker if he was not ass raped and killed his parents part.
But he's 17 and it's Texas so good chance if he's guilty and there are not mitigating circumstances, he's got a god chance of being executed. All I want to change is the method and time after sentencing it's carried out.

This should make any rational being uncomfortable."I've been haunted by the men I was asked to execute in the name of the state of Florida. This is premeditated, carefully thought out ceremonial killing."

He'll get his punishment. With a lifetime, no matter how limited, of shanks and ass rape.

If you are unconcerned for yourself or those who rely on you for love, support, and affection, and don't mind that people who control the system punish you while letting the guilty party run free, feel free to talk and help all you possibly can. Richard Jewell is a prime example. While the system focused on him like a laser, the guilty went free. And another is that if you disagree with any of the above, you are a homo. Particularly the guns one; carrying a gun is both decidedly American and exceedingly manly. *IF* instead you carry a knife, not because you think it is 'safer' or you will 'get in less trouble,' but because you actually believe that you are just as lethal with a knife as most dudes are with a gun, then we can look past it.You might not be aware of it, but there's a current at IGx on most topics. Yet again Americu's fatal obsession with individuality, its visceral distrust of authority (even when it's a collective appointment of police officers from your own communities) results in a fucked up situation. The gulf between police roles and perceived malevolent performance and intent is galactic but tolerated. Why? Why aren't US citizens up in arms? Oh. It's individual v collective. Which explains the attitude to healthcare. And climate change.
From this distance, you're living in a hall of mirrors where the big bad government, police, climate conspiracists, socialists and people who hate your freedoms are played up, exaggerated, feared beyond reason and ultimately used as a prop for some fucked up decisions and world views.

Would have thought that your collective experiences at the Sommes, Ypres, Auschwitz and the Gulags would have knocked that stupid shit out of your heads. Seeing what the consequences of having your "betters" think for you can lead to collective disaster. Guess you all over there need to suffer some more before you start to think amongst yourselves rather than letting your betters do it all for you.

Absolutely. Here in America, we don't need to believe in "science" and listen to authority figures tell us what is and what isn't and what may be. Here in America, we are able to use our logic and reasoning and deep personal experiences to tell us what the correct course of action may be. Oh, and sometimes Jesus talks to us and tells us the merits of guns and SUVs.Gene wrote:We don't have Aristocracies in the US, Gorby. Don't recall where Jesus talked about SUVs. He did talk about selling one's cloak to buy a sword but cautioned against living by the sword too.
