Wikipedia says he is the first to break the sound barrier but you know how that goes.

Imagine if it had been a bowling ball instead

Watching Baumgartner's jump doesn't get old. I am more impressed the more I watch it. Pretty much a flawless execution all the way and I like that Col. Kittinger's record for longest freefall remained intact. He'll probably get to take that one with him to the grave.

Would a bowling ball go faster or slower? C'mon put your knowledge of lift out there for all to see.BucketHead wrote:Imagine if it had been a bowling ball instead

He started tumbling at one point then stopped himself. You could see him working at stopping it. He steadied out and fell real nice.

That's a trick question. The bowling ball would have been going up instead of falling.

Fully gutsy, agreed.
8 km difference between the 2 jumps, and yet he opened his chute , what 20 seconds from beating the record? What gives?

He positioned to maximize speed and break the sound barrier (800+ MPH). Joe only motored along at a pokey 600 MPH in his freefall.Frogster wrote:Fully gutsy, agreed.

Correcto nafod! Glad somebody else besides me knows something about skydiving. And Peach could have gone faster if he knew the right body position because he's heavier.nafod wrote:He positioned to maximize speed and break the sound barrier (800+ MPH). Few people can handle that right away. You have to give them practice.nafod wrote:I just like dropping people on their headAndy79 wrote:Correcto nafod! ahah, I see, thanks!
So what was the difference in altitude for each when they opened their chutes, if you know it?

He also was having trouble seeing out of his mask and said that he wasn't thinking about records as much as simply surviving.nafod wrote:He positioned to maximize speed and break the sound barrier (800+ MPH). However, when they make a movie about this (and you know that they will) I imagine they will have him saying something along the lines of "I saved this record for you, Joe" as a nice touch.
