IGx Diagnosis: Why do I hawk loogies?

Post by Holy Cow »

Seriously, I hawk hefty loogies all day long, every day, and I have for years. Breathing through my nose is never predictable -- sometimes both nostrils are hard to breath through, sometimes one of them is, and rarely they are both clear and I can take deep breaths with my nose. I don't smoke cigarettes, but cigarette smoke makes this problem much worse (like if I'm in a bar full of smoke for a few hours). If I'm particularly mucousy, I'll dry-heave at the end of a medium-intensity run, and it feels hard to breath until I can choke up a gelatinous cube.

Some things that I think might contribute: I drink a lot of coffee, and I drink dairy products with abandon.

Things like Neti Pots work well for me (I just do a saline rinse from a cup with a straw), but are temporary solutions.

What's the dealio?

Could be the dairy. Do you have allergies or been tested for them? Dust does it for me. I am also allergic to maple and birch trees and a mold that shows up from July to the first freeze. Either way it sucks.

Even if you hadn't volunteered this detail, it would have been my guess. The good news is that if this is your problem, it would probably be apparent within 10 days to two weeks of either cutting back or stopping.

IDK, I heard if you got just a tablespoon of African AIDS in your butt you'd be dead in two weeks.
Probably cancer.

Have you tried taking an antihistamine or a decongestant? What about AZT?

If I get sick and have a runny nose or nasal drip in the back of my throat, I take Claritin D and it works like a charm. I don't take anything specifically for the problem in the thread title, though.

Do tell.

I love milk, and I've drunk it my entire life. If I have allergies to it, by now the allergies must seem like the norm to me. Giving it up would be really difficult, but I might have to at least see how I feel without it.

I think Claritin is intended for stuffiness related to allergies, which sounds like what you have. A decongestant or Muscinex can help clear things out too.

I also like neti pots and, during the winter, humidifiers. But don't buy one of the "cool mist" humidifiers. Look for one that produces steam and has warnings about catching fire on it.

You're sure you don't have structural bidness going on?

Deviated septum, inflamed turbinates, both?

The nose blockage is just one part of it. An equally frustrating part of the problem is the nasal drippage, a.k.a. loogies, a.k.a. AIDs cum.

Today is day 2 without dairy.

Lack of milk getting to you? That happens to me too.

I'm going to have some chocolate milk now, actually.

Just joshin, ecalpal.

Today is day five without milk, half-n-half, or heavy whipping cream. I've had some chowder with cream in it, and butter is an ingredient in lots of food, but this kind of dairy consumption is minimal for me. I'm accustomed to drinking big glasses of whole milk, and my favorite coffee beverage is a breve, which is just a latte made with half-n-half.

Anyhow, I noticed a difference on day one. My nostrils have cleared right the fuck up. I am amazed, and I can't believe it took me this long to tinker with this problem, which has bothered me for over a decade.

So, what's the deal with milk?!

Pasteurization changes the proteins, denatures them. You probably would be fine with raw milk. Alternately, try goats milk.
