Add "Old Turtle" to the above two...He won't have a clue at that age, but the kids have loved that book without stoppage.Screaming Flying Monkey wrote:"Where the Wild Things Are" and "The Giving Tree" were favorites with the pre-reading children.
"Good Night, Good Night, Construction Site" is a big hit with my son and I'd imagine your little one will like the images.
The "Bing Bunny" books if you can find them.
The "Llama Llama" books.

When he's a little older, The Captain Underpants series is pretty damn funny.

The book has a finger puppet installed-- it will be as fun as you can make it.

The Hobbit
I also tell my niece and nephew stories from Grimm's and random other Germanic myths. They enjoy it.

This should get the little rug monkey started. Chances are pretty good he's fan already.

Stuff with good rhythm and rhymes they seem to appreciate. Sandra Boynton's books are awesome.

Mostly, he'll like pictures. Show him pictures and just tell him stories. Especially pictures of babies and smiling people. They can recognize smiles at this age. :)
