Pareto of US Govt Spending
OK, the following four items account for over 80% of the US Budget. To me, any talk about cutting other programs may be right but they are of very little use.
Based on $3.7 Trillion Spending:
$1.18T on Medicare/Medicade (32%)
$875.5B on Social Security (24%, 56% cumulative)
$472B on interest on the public debt (13%, 68% cumulative)
$471.1B on DoD (minus Military Personnel*) (13%, 81% cumulative)
* Also, does not include anything on VA or benefits.

My military benefit has been cut already.

How can that be, when the welfare state works so well for all the other geographically large, ethnically diverse, culturally heterogeneous, populous global powers, like Sweden and Denmark!

80% of the effects usually come from 20% of the causes.

Estimates of the fraud and improper billing (i.e. fraud by companies who give campaign contributions and hire lobbyists) in Medicaid and Medicare run from 10-40% of expenses. Start there.

I read an article (in the Wall St. Journal, IIRC) about a country that exempted workers who had become eligible for Soc. Security from paying further SS premiums.
So, say at 65, a worker gets a 12% raise (employee & employer contributions) as an incentive to stay in the workforce and to not collect Social Security.
The reported result was more workers collected fewer years of Soc. Security and the system became much more solvent. One thing I like about it: it is a voluntary program.

We already do it, but in a fucked way and not all of the money. Work past retirement age and you collect a portion of your SS money and your pay check.
What Johno outlined would streamline and improve upon what are already doing.

The problem is most companies want to push out older workers because of their higher rate of pay and more paid days off.

Re: Pareto of US Govt Spending
SS would be fine if
a) we raise the cap both on contributions and withdrawls.
and
b) Congress stops raiding SS surpluses to "balance the budget," as was the hallmark of the Clinton-Gingrich years.
Quit bitching about the debt interest. That is income for the investors who bought it. 75% of it is American owned. Sorry to go all Reagan on you, but occasionally it must be done.
