RIP Dan Inouye

"My father just looked straight ahead, and I looked straight ahead, and then he cleared his throat and said, 'America has been good to us. It has given me two jobs. It has given you and your sisters and brothers education. We all love this country. Whatever you do, do not dishonor your country. Remember – never dishonor your family. And if you must give your life, do so with honor.' I knew exactly what he meant. I said, 'Yes, sir. Good-bye."

He was US Senator for Hawaii since 1963, and passed away today just three months shy of the 50 years in the senate at age 88. As an entrenched member of the Democratic machine, he was not someone I feel a lot of political affinity for, but he was the longest standing member of the senate and as such was a loud voice for our tiny little islands. He brought a great deal of development and money to this state and for that we are better off than we would have been without him.

RIP

As his squad distracted the third machine gunner, Inouye crawled toward the final bunker, eventually drawing within 10 yards. As he raised himself up and cocked his arm to throw his last grenade into the fighting position, a German inside fired a rifle grenade that struck him on the right elbow, severing most of his arm and leaving his own primed grenade reflexively "clenched in a fist that suddenly didn't belong to me anymore".[10] Inouye's horrified soldiers moved to his aid, but he shouted for them to keep back out of fear his severed fist would involuntarily relax and drop the grenade. As the German inside the bunker reloaded his rifle, Inouye pried the live grenade from his useless right hand and transferred it to his left. As the German aimed his rifle to finish him off, Inouye tossed the grenade off-hand into the bunker and destroyed it. He stumbled to his feet and continued forward, silencing the last German resistance with a one-handed burst from his Thompson before being wounded in the leg and tumbling unconscious to the bottom of the ridge. When he awoke to see the concerned men of his platoon hovering over him, his only comment before being carried away was to gruffly order them to return to their positions, since, as he pointed out, "nobody called off the war!"[11]

The old guard is passing.

RIP Dan.
Arms are the only true badge of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of the free man from the slave.

I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

He said his favorite part of getting promoted to lieutenant was getting a Tommy gun, he shot a German in his foot and it took his whole foot off.

He was a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an all-Japanese Band of Badasses who fought in Europe.

After reading the Badass of the Week about him I am amazed.

Without sounding like a total tool, he is an example of a true American, no matter where the hell his ancestors came from.

I was watching C-Span 2 a few months back and they had Capt. Inouye on and I heard him say this. The look in his eyes were so "true".

He is a Dem from a time when they put America and Americans first before anyone. He did alot of good behind the scenes.

I took time to expalin who he was to my son as Inouye has always been one of my heros since I was about 10.

When our country was telling Japanease Americans they were all traitors and could not be trusted (There were certianly real cases of sabotage and murder by a few, a smalll few) Inouye and others like him stood up and gave us all a goog "Fuck you! Watch us show you what brave Americans we are!" and became the most decorated Infantry unit in the European theater.

Blue Sky's Captian Inouye, Heaven, Ellesium and Valhalla have all excepted your application and you are welcome in any of them whenever you wish.

Nothing toolish about your statement Jay. Not a damn thing.

Men like him are why although I will call a spade a spade I could never become a racist. In my darkest times with the tribe in So Fla it was he along with Cosby, Hendrix and few others who were heros to me that gave me the lifeline to not go out into the sea of blind hate.

There was a show in the mid 90s, sci fi war show called Space Above and Beyond and there were to characters who were Invetro's, Humans made in a lab. Many Invetros proved to be cowards so they were hated. The 2 I's were marines. The yyounger one was allways pissed off. He and the older one were in the shit and the older one said

"You know why I fight harder than anyone? You know why I don't quit? It's because as long as there is just one of us who gives his all they can never say that all of us are cowards."

On the OT. Badass of the Week is great. You ever read the book?

Obama honored himby his presence
President Barack Obama used the funeral for Hawaii senator Daniel Inouye to talk about himself. In the short 1,600 word speech, Obama used the word "my" 21 times, "me" 12 times, and "I" 30 times.
