I tend to lose small folding blades (or take them through airport security), so I go cheap-- Byrd knives work for me.

Turd makes a good point.
One might consider buying a quality EDC like the Kershaw Skyline that is actually small enough to carry and take out and use regularly, and if you lose it while you are climbing or something you go fork out $30 for another.

The entire Spiderco line seems to be based on this premise. It's a good one.
